Hours and hours had passed since I sent my message to Jasmine, and still no reply. The silence was deafening, and my worries began to take shape with every passing minute. I tried to keep myself busy, but my mind kept wandering back to Jasmine and what could be going on in her life.

As I sat at my desk, attempting to do some homework, I was interrupted by the Facebook call ringtone playing in the background. My heart skipped a beat as I asked myself, "Who could it be?" I picked up the laptop, and to my surprise, it was Jasmine.

We had not yet reached a stage in our relationship where we would call each other at random times of the day, so I knew something was off. I closed the door and put on my earphones, not wanting anyone to know about Jasmine or the fact that I was talking to a girl. It wasn't that I was ashamed of her, but I didn't want to deal with any unnecessary drama.

Although I knew my English wasn't ready to be tested over the phone, at that moment, I just wanted to hear Jasmine's voice. I answered the call, and my ears immediately imagined how her "hello" would sound. I was expecting a soft, giggly, and flirty one. But to my surprise, I heard some people talking in the background.

Concerned, I asked Jasmine if everything was okay, as she had been silent for the last day. To my shock, Jasmine's

mother was injured the previous night due to a drunk driving accident. My heart sank as I tried to comfort Jasmine and gather as much information as I could about the situation.

Jasmine's mother was an alcoholic, and her father left her when Jasmine was just seven years old. The burden of taking care of her mother had fallen on Jasmine's shoulders, and it was a heavy load to bear. I felt helpless as I listened to Jasmine's story, but I knew I needed to be there for her in any way that I could.

After ensuring that Jasmine was okay and promising to call her every two hours, I hung up the phone. I put my homework aside and sat there for a moment, pondering everything I had just learned. My mind was bombarded

with a plethora of information, and I knew I needed to take some time to think.

An hour passed, and I decided to call Jasmine again. I knew that we wouldn't be texting much after this. When Jasmine picked up the phone, I could hear the relief in her voice. She informed me that Alisha's mother would be picking them up in an hour. I expressed my concern for Jasmine and her family and asked her to call me once she was home.

Seconds before ending the call, Jasmine apologized for scaring me. I sat there, deep in thought, trying to process everything that had transpired. I couldn't shake the feeling that this was just the beginning of a much more complicated and challenging journey.

I knew that I cared for Jasmine deeply, but I wasn't sure if I was ready for the responsibility that came with dating someone in her situation. I felt selfish for even thinking that way, but I couldn't help it. I knew that I needed to take some time to figure out what I wanted and what was best for both of us.

As the days went by, I talked to Jasmine regularly and did everything I could to support her. Her mother's condition had stabilized, but there were still many unknowns. I knew that the road ahead would be difficult, but I was willing to be there for Jasmine every step of the way.
