Two figures stood on a forested hill.
Behind one, a thin, scaled tail trailed down into the grass.
The other's visible skin was covered in tiny black scales, almost like freckles.
Around them, the night was still. A gentle breeze stirred the long grass, and fireflies began to take off into the air, mirroring the stars above.
The tailed figure turned to the other, an expression of deep but tired love hidden by the dark colored mask covering his face.
"This world is beautiful, my love." he murmured, reaching out to take the other figure's hand in his own.
She regarded him with a soft smile, pale purple eyes catching the starlight.
"It is indeed. I think you'll enjoy it here." She agreed, looking away as soon as those words had left her mouth. Something like guilt stealing away her smile.
"Only I? You don't really mean to go back there?" He asked her, voice rising in surprise. She only stared down at their hands closed together.
"I'm afraid, the people here don't like our kind. How can we raise our children in a place so hostile toward them?" She murmured, leaning forward into the man's shoulder.
"They'll have us to protect them. Besides.. it's not like we can go back" He sighed, wrapping an arm around her to gently stroke her hair. "They seem to like you at least" he pointed out, forcing a small smile.
She looked up at him in the dark, and was aware suddenly of just how grateful she was to not be alone in this. She pressed a soft kiss to the corner of his mouth, before turning her gaze back to the small town nestled into the trees below them.
"As long as it's with you." She whispered.
