Ash and Serena left Seattle towards the Southeast and within an hour of hiking were immediately hit with steep slopes. But despite the rugged terrain, they enjoyed themselves. Sure, they could've hitch-hiked along the highway after which Route 22 was named, but the constant noise and wind of passing vehicles would've been too oppressive.
They spent their time talking about whatever they pleased. They talked about pokémon they wanted to see, trainers they've met, prospects of challenges and celebrations, and reminisced on their last journey together in Kalos. And Pikachu was just enjoying walking alongside Ash for once, listening to their exchanges.
"Man, his face was hilarious." Ash laughed.
"Remember when Clemont built his first pokémon translator?" Serena asked.
"And then the Pancham ate all our food? How could I forget?" Ash said.
"Clemont was so happy it worked, but you were just disappointed that you lost your spaghetti." Serena laughed.
"I was not!" Ash objected.
"Yeah, you were." Serena insisted.
Ash smirked. "What're you smirking about?" Serena asked.
In one swift motion, Ash grabbed Serena's gray hat from her head and held it behind his back.
"Hey!" Serena yelled. "Give me my hat back!"
"Nope. Not until you take that back!" Ash teased.
"We'll see about that." Serena said, trying to reach past Ash.
Ash blocked her arm and backed up. He gave her a big smirk before sprinting down the path.
"Come back here, you!" Serena said, laughing.
"Piiika." Pikachu sighed, using Quick Attack to catch up to Ash.
Ash and Serena were having lots of fun sprinting down the path. Although Serena was really fast, Ash's longer stride gave him the edge, letting him gain ground away from Serena. Pikachu clung to Ash's shoulder, thinking of this as training to hold on to a rampaging, violent pokémon. If you think about it, there's actually not much difference right now.
However, their fun was cut short suddenly, when Ash ran straight into something. Something stretchy... and invisible?
Ash's momentum made whatever it was stretch, but then it retracted again, bringing Ash and Pikachu right back to wobble around where they initially hit it.
"What in the world?" Ash asked.
Serena slowed to a stop, confused at the sight of Ash and Pikachu seemingly being held in the air and only his feet dragging on the ground as they struggled against something. "Huh?"
"I'm stuck in something!" Ash said. "It's really sticky and stretchy."
"Ok, um..." Serena mumbled, not sure what to do. She cautiously approached Ash, and reached out her arm. Her finger touched some sort of string that was covered in goop. She immediately pulled her finger away, and the string stretched much more than she expected before it finally let go. "I think you're in some sort of web."
Seconds later, some rustling was heard in the trees and a large black and white pokémon emerged.
