"I'm here," Peter said as he looked up at the cross in the church. "I'm being deployed tomorrow, to France. I am to fight in the trenches. The ringing is still in my ears, I thought you would..."
Nothing moved.
"In the midst of the bombing, which has only gotten worse. Not that Narnia has bombs... Susan's foot has healed, but she has a limp. I fear for Lucy and Edmund, but they at least are in no danger from our enemy. To be quite honest, I haven't seen you here Aslan. Not in our world, outside of Narnia. Nothing happens the same way twice but... I thought that we would hear something. I am barely 18."
Still, the church was quiet.
"18. I am to be sent to war!" Peter shouted, growing impatient. "I have been in a war before, but never like this. With guns, tanks, dead men rotting on the muddy plains. If you are there... Help us. Please, get us out of this. Every day, a member of my family could be killed. Every day."
Still, not a whisper came from the church walls.
"I will fight. Whatever the cost to myself may be. I have to help them. My countrymen, my brothers, they are fighting, and so must I. I have been a king, I have led others to war, yet it is so hard for me to do so again. It feels more real."
Not a paw or hair of fur entered into the church.
"If you are there Aslan. Protect Susan, Lucy and Edmund. Let this war be over before you next take a breath, and heal me of this ringing. How am I to fight if I can't hear the shots being fired?"
The church stood silent and Peter stood with tears in his eyes and anger in his heart.
"If you alone defeated the white witch, why do so many have to die?" Peter asked before he left and Aslan, Lord over the cross, watched him leave.
