Chapter One:
the first day back.ADELAIDE HALLOW had missed Hogwarts. she had missed the portraits hung upon the tall castle walls and the sound of chatter in the hallways between classes.
She missed the Slytherin common room and talking at night with Imelda just before bed. Adelaide even missed the sight of Imelda frowning after losing to Zenobia Noke in a game of gobstones. She, however, did not miss the stench that came with her closest friend's loss.
She missed her classes and the professors, but most of all she missed dinner in the great hall.
the chatter from all over the room, the scent of food in the air and the sense of belonging it brought with it.
And so, when she arrived back, she couldn't help but grin at the sight of the busy entranceway. the journey from her hamlet to Hogwarts hadn't taken too long, but it had felt like forever. The second she had spotted Imelda entering just a few feet in front of her, she sped up. Her right arm reached out, tugging on the other girl's robes, grinning when her friend turned with an annoyed look on her face. "it's nice to see you too, Imelda." she announced with a playful expression watching as Imelda's frown turned into a small smile "there you are, I was beginning to think you weren't going to show." Imelda commented the two locking arms as they headed further into the castle.
Adelaide had chuckled at Imelda's words, "please, there's nowhere else I'd rather be."
"that's sad really, I know I'd rather be playing quidditch," Imelda stated as they climbed the first two flights of stairs to come face to face with a large door. "oh, we know Imelda." Adelaide laughed as she pushed open the door, pulling a pouting Imelda after her, "at least I have the new quidditch season to help me through the year." Imelda commented as she gestured to the four large house points hourglasses, "hopefully we will win the house cup along too."
the two girls walked through two more sets of doors before finally, they arrived in the busy great hall. teenagers of all ages talking and hugging as they greeted their friends. Imelda pulled Adelaide towards the Slytherin table their arms separating as Imelda took a seat beside a tall boy with messy brown hair, she heard her friend greet the boy as she slipped onto the bench beside her closest friend.
Adelaide's eyes followed the long table that had open spaces at the side closest to the podium where the headmaster would soon take his place to begin the opening speech before sorting the new students, the first years.
"I heard there's a new student, a fifth year." a voice captured Adelaide's attention, it was the voice of Grace Pinch-Smedley, a girl that Adelaide would speak to every now and then, they also shared the same dorm along with Imelda. " a new fifth year?" Sebastian Sallow, the boy with the messy brown hair beside Imelda questioned leaning forward in interest, his elbows resting on the dining table.
"yes! apparently they spent the summer with professor fig." another voice perked up, the voice of another fifth-year, this one Adelaide didn't know. though she had seen the girl with Imelda during quidditch last year. "how intriguing." Imelda commented with a small eye-roll making Adelaide's lips curl up in amusement.
the room fell silent as the headmaster stepped up to the podium.
"ehem, welcome," the headmaster, Phineas Nigellus black started, "a few things to cover this evening but for now, let us get on with the sorting ceremony, professor Weasley if you would."
Headmaster Black was far from popular with both the students and the parents of the students, Adelaide had witnessed many a crowd in Hogsmead the year prior, all wanting him to resign. he was a tall man with a mustache and a beard, and narrowed eyes that were rather intimidating to the first years.
Professor Weasley on the other hand was strict, she had Red hair that was kept secured in a bun and brown eyes that glimmered with intelligence, she was the deputy headmistress and with good reason, she had eyes and ears all over the castle, if something happened, she would know.
"that's all the first years been sorted, I don't see a new fifth-year student in sight." a hushed whisper pulled Adelaide from her thoughts, "perhaps their running late, I don't see professor fig either," Grace replied to the person who had spoken and just as the headmaster took a step forward to address the students once more, his eyes narrowed down the long path to the old wooden doors - the entrance to the great hall and without a word, he took off in long strides before disappearing from Adelaide's sight.
a moment passed, a moment filled with hushed whispers from students all over the great hall, from each of the four tables, but it all stopped the second the headmaster returned, a tall boy following after him.
The boy had Raven Black hair, and he seemed to be taking everything in as he tried his best to keep up with Headmaster Black who was already climbing the steps, "Professor Weasley, we've one more to be sorted."
everyone was silent as they watched the teenager climb up the steps and sit down on the old stool, Professor Weasley placed the sorting hat down on his head and everyone waited.
"SLYTHERIN!"
