"SLYTHERIN!"
The Great hall erupted into cheers and claps as young Adelaide Hallow slipped off of the stool. Her robes changed from black to green and silver once she was on her feet.
Curiously she ran her finger along the robes feeling the magic travelling along the material, a feeling that made a small smile appear on her lips.
She let her hand drop at the sound of a cough. She was stood in front of the stool admiring her uniform - holding up the ceremony. Adelaide blushed before rushing down the steps towards the end table. Slithering onto the long bench she finds herself seated beside a second-year with platinum blonde and grey eyes "Welcome to slytherin." The second-year girl smiled.
Adelaide returned the smile before her eyes returned to the ceremony.
She watched as a girl with a tight bun was called up, she looked nervous as she glanced back into the group of first year looking at her sibling for comfort as she was sorted.
"SLYTHERIN!"
Adelaide pulled herself from her thoughts as the new fifth-year stood from the stool, he turned to face professor Weasley who with a flick of her wand changed the colour of his uniform just like she had done for Adelaide all those years ago.
"He's handsome." She heard Grace call out. "But not as handsome as me, right." But Sebastian hadn't asked, he was so confident in himself that he believed it to be true.
Adelaide gave a small laugh but thankfully he didn't hear. Sebastian Sallow was a funny fellow, he was a loyal friend and brother to all those who knew him, and one of the most popular Slytherins. He was known to flirt with girls yet he never took anything further. He was a gentleman too when he wanted to be.
"Oh of course Sebastian, no one is better looking than you," Imelda replied sarcastically before the group of fifth years all laughed, Sebastian included.
Adelaide wasn't as close to them as she was to Imelda, of course, she spoke to Sebastian a few times, usually in class but she had spoken to his sister Anne more but everyone knew what had happened to Anne and why she wasn't at Hogwarts this year.
She had been cursed by goblins. It had been a shock to everyone but Sebastian and his best friend Ominis Gaunt were the most affected. A trio down to a duo. Adelaide's heart went out to them.
As soon as the new fifth year had joined the table, dinner began.
The Slytherins all made conversation over dinner, the topic started with what everyone did over the summer: Adelaide had spent the summer in France with her father's parents, and then the topic changed to quidditch.
As dinner came to an end, the headmaster approached the podium and cleared his throat, capturing the student's attention.
"Oh, and one more thing - Due to the unfortunate injury on the pitch in last spring's final, this year's quidditch season has been cancelled."
That caused an uproar from the students.
"WHAT?!" Imelda loudly questioned in disbelief slamming her palms against the slytherin dining table, "this can't be happening."
Imelda wasn't the only slytherin at the table to be upset about the cancellation of the sport; many more of the students were disappointed but Adelaide wasn't one of them, she wasn't interested in the sport, she only attended the matches to support Imelda.
"Enough. It's not as though I've cancelled flying altogether. But - don't tempt me." The hall went quiet at the headmaster's words. "You are here to focus on your academic futures. I'm sure you all have plenty to do before classes tomorrow." He waved his hands forward.
Adelaide waited.
"I said - I'm sure you all have plenty to do before classes tomorrow." He repeated when no one moved.
Finally the students all began to move. Adelaide slid off of her seat only to catch a glimpse of Imelda rushing towards the slytherin quidditch team.
Adelaide sighed knowing that this wouldn't be the last she heard of the quidditch cancellation.
She fell into step beside Sebastian Sallow, in front of them was Sebastains closest friend Ominis who had his wand out, a blinking red light flashing as he walked.
"Sebastian! How is Anne feeling? We sent a few letters over the summer." She smiled watching as a look of pain flashed across the sallow boy's face. "She should be here with us." He started, "thank you for asking, I know she appreciated the letters. Perhaps you should join me when I visit her next, I'm sure a familiar face would warm her heart." He spoke, earning a small nod.
"I would love to see her again," Adelaide spoke. Anne Sallow had shared a dorm with her for the first few years at Hogwarts and Adelaide missed the way the Sallow girl would tell stories just before bed. They had also sat beside each other in Defense Against the Dark Arts so it was bizarre not to see the girl.
"Adelaide!" The voice of Imelda called making the girl smile towards Sebastian "let's talk again." She smiled before speeding up and rushing towards an impatient imelda.
