It was now a half-moon. It had been at least three days since Horizon had shown herself to the rest of ThunderClan, and some cats were still fighting with Fernstar either about the matter of the possible kittypet spy or the new deputy.
Despite Whitestripe's hanging doubt, he was actually doing a pretty good job as deputy. She was still surprised that cats actually wanted to be deputies, let alone leaders
"Spidertail," Fernstar sighed as Whitestripe passed them on the way to the fresh-kill pile, "I don't know how many times I need to tell you, my decision is final. Tigerfur is your new deputy and that will not change until I die."
"But he shouldn't be deputy!" Spidertail insisted desperately. "No good will come of it. He'll bring disaster to our Clan!"
"I find that highly unlikely," Fernstar grumbled, growing impatient. "If, and only if, someone finds true evidence of him being a traitor, then I will exile him. But even if I do, I can assure you that you will not be ThunderClan's new deputy. I do not want cats like you being my successor."
"What's that supposed to mean?"
"It means I do not want impulsive, impatient, unreasonable and demanding cats to be the deputy. You have more energy than you can handle, and if that bad energy were to be placed into the leader position, it wouldn't just cause disaster to this Clan, but to our whole territory."
"The Lake is a murder pit anyway!" Spidertail snarled.
"Were you not against fleeing?" Fernstar countered.
Spidertail didn't answer.
"I thought so. Before you say any more, talk to Russetfire or Windcaller," Fernstar told him. "One of them should have a job available to you. I'd suggest hurrying before the storm starts. StarClan is unhappy, as am I. Make use of yourself before I find a job for you, and it won't be one you'll enjoy."
Spidertail begrudgingly stormed off to where Windcaller was talking with Fuzzyear near the camp entrance.
Fernstar watched Spidertail leave and walked up to Whitestripe.
"Good morning, Fernstar," she said with a nod.
"Tigerfur told me of your nighttime trip to RiverClan," Fernstar whispered. "What did Pebblesoot have to say?"
"Tigerfur didn't tell you where WindClan and RiverClan are?"
"He did. I meant, what did he say about the camp?"
"He never really made any comment on it," Whitestripe said, quickly thinking back. She didn't remember hearing him mumble anything. "I think he was as shocked as we were."
Fernstar tilted her head thoughtfully, then looked at the gray sky. Dark storm clouds were gathering in the distance, making way for a final thunderstorm. Though, by the looks of it, it wouldn't come for a long while.
"Find that kittypet when you leave next," Fernstar said finally. "Take her to the place Pebblesoot suggested looking for. Take Ashpelt and Flameclaw with you. Take as long as you need, but come back in the next five days. Sooner if possible."
"What about Spiraltail? What will she do?"
"She has... problems of her own, I assume," Fernstar said, moving back. "Reedtail will help Russetfire if she needs it. You may tell them where you're going or where the missing Clan members are, but none of them will be leaving camp even if Reedtail has recovered."
"But why?"
Fernstar hesitated. "Let's just say she'll be quite busy. Everyone in this Clan has something to do," she said, turning away. "As long as I live, I'll make sure that my Clan is safe... Tigerfur will help."
Without another word, Fernstar walked over to the Nursery to check on Echokit.
Whitestripe grabbed a mouse and, later, at sunhigh, called for Flameclaw and Ashpelt before departing.
