"Fernstar, they're back!" called Stripedfur.
Fernstar ran over to the camp entrance to see them charging forward. "What happened? They're still alive, aren't they?"
"Yes, they're alive," Whitestripe panted. She took a brief glance at the sky and saw that they had run throughout the entire night.
"We brought Pebblesoot," Flameclaw said, nodding to the RiverClan tom. "There are some dogs on the way. We need to prepare!"
"Dogs!" Fernstar spat scornfully. "Stripedfur, find Tigerfur's patrol! They shouldn't be far away. They left not too long ago."
Stripedfur grabbed her other brother from the fresh-kill pile and they ran away in search of the dawn patrol.
"You five look exhausted," Fernstar said. "Go to the dens and rest. Hmm... Perhaps it would be safer for you all in the spare den. You can take a piece of prey each from the fresh-kill pile, but stay out of the fight!"
Whitestripe felt like falling down and laying there, but she knew it wouldn't be safe if the dogs came. "We'll tell you what we saw when it's over," Whitestripe promised.
Fernstar nodded, following them inside. They quickly ran over to the spare den while Fernstar disappeared into the warriors' den.
A few moments later, she heard distant barking getting closer. The dogs would arrive soon.
Suddenly, Spiraltail appeared at the entrance of the den. "Fernstar wanted me to ask what happened."
"Shouldn't you be fighting?" Pebblesoot asked dully.
Spiraltail shrugged. "She's our leader, so I'll do what she wants me to."
"Can you give us a few minutes to rest?" Ashpelt asked his sister. Spiraltail nodded and ran out to help the others who were fighting.
Whitestripe went to sleep beside Flameclaw while the fighting went on outside.
As she dozed, the words of the disembodied voice from the Winding River repeated themselves in her mind.
Moonlight guides you... Moonlight guides you... Moonlight guides you... The black sun lies...
