Whitestripe was pulled out of the vision before she could think about what she saw.
Spiraltail looked dizzier than Ashpelt and Whitestripe felt.
"Are you able to handle that many memories being shown at once?" Ashpelt asked both in bewilderment and sympathy.
Ignoring the question, Spiraltail jumped straight into thought. "That last memory from Sphinx looked like it happened a time after the second, when she met Marley and Marjoram."
"But Webstar can't be that old, can he?" Whitestripe said.
"Buzzardstar was old," Ashpelt pointed out.
"Yes, but look at us, then look at Stripedfur and Darkclaw. That's quite a gap."
"They actually look the same age, if you change Webstar's coat," Spiraltail pointed out. "Snow would've looked younger, too, had she not had to undergo such stress in her younger years."
"That doesn't explain Grayfur," Whitestripe said. "They both looked the same age. Sphinx, in that other vision, looked how Webstar does now."
"Some cats don't look their age," Spiraltail stated. "Any cat who didn't know us would think you're younger than me. I look way older!"
"You do not!"
"Speaking of that other vision," Ashpelt said. "Spiraltail, do you remember when we were apprentices and we were sent to find catmint for Russetfire?"
"And Reedtail believed the dog had been set on us?" Spiraltail finished. "Yes, it's hard to forget."
"In that vision, Sphinx was running from two dogs... We ran straight past her! She was alive all along!"
"Then that body by the Winding Lake was hers," Whitestripe muttered. "I wonder what happened to her kits?"
"That's if they're still alive," Ashpelt pointed out. "That Marley cat went missing, and Marjoram died.
"I think they'll still be alive," Spiraltail said. "Remember, in the vision, Sphinx was thinking about a stranger who had looked after her kits, or was at least staying where she was."
"That stranger may be dead, too," Ashpelt said. "Whether he was Clanborn or not, you'd probably need to use all your energy to find out, but even so, I doubt he would've lived. It seems that Crookedfire and Half-Sight were targeting a specific line, that being Grayfur's and Stonestar's. That's probably why we haven't been attacked in such a long time."
"You think they're plotting something?" Spiraltail said, reminding Whitestripe of the conversation she'd overheard coming from the dead cats.
Maybe there's something about that that I missed? she thought uncertainly.
Nightfire is definitely involved in some way, and Stonegaze seemed to be reluctant to believe the same as everyone else, that ShadowClan is filled entirely with evil cats.
The Medicine Cats have a large role to play in all of this. The place Shadedclaw was talking about... Did Frozenwind manage to find Pebblesoot and talk to him about that? Maybe the place they're protecting is the Winding River.

Whitestripe couldn't think of how she could find Pebblesoot without being followed by unwanted cats.
She thought back to Sphinx's last memory. A stranger had entered her home, asking for shelter. Not long after, apparently, Sphinx had been killed by Webstar or some other cat.
Her body would've rotted in the ground if it had happened that long ago, wouldn't it?
Whitestripe thought in confusion.
Maybe not. I could be wrong. But then, what happened to her kits?

She shook her head. They'd find out eventually.
"It's getting late," Spiraltail said. "I think we should rest and think more on it tomorrow."
"Do you need to see Russetfire?" Whitestripe said. "Seems like that took a lot of energy."
"I'll be fine," Spiraltail said. "But if you and Flameclaw would mind showing me the Winding River tomorrow, that'd be helpful."
"Flameclaw has an apprentice to train," Ashpelt grumbled. "Leave him here and let him do his work."
"Like you can complain," Whitestripe scoffed. "You ditched your apprentice to see Horizon."
Ashpelt flicked his tail grumpily and left for the warriors' den with his sisters behind him.
