"Where's Ashpelt this time?" Whitestripe asked the apprentice in frustration.
"I had a headache so he let me have a short break," the young she-cat said with a mere shrug.
Whitestripe felt Nightkit shiver. "I'll take her inside," Spiraltail said, bending down to pick the kit up.
"You should go, too," Whitestripe said to Frostpaw sternly.
"Wait a moment," Crowwatcher said just as Frostpaw turned to leave. "What was the most recent dream you've had?"
"It was similar to what you described just before," Frostpaw said cautiously. "Lots of bodies... Too many bodies..."
"Did you see anything else?" Crowwatcher inquired.
Frostpaw thought for a long moment. Finally, she said, "I saw a large... thing. I don't know what it was, but it nearly blinded me in my dream."
"A monster, perhaps?" Reedtail said. "Their eyes glow bright enough to hurt any cat's eyes."
"It was letting off a sickening smell, too," the apprentice continued. "It filled my nostrils and made my eyes water and sting... There was a black puddle underneath it."
"It's called oil," corrected a familiar voice. "My twolegs use it to burn what they don't need or don't like, that way my home is warm in the cold season."
Whitestripe turned around and saw Ashpelt's kittypet mate, Horizon, walking up to them. Is everyone eavesdropping today? she thought angrily.
"You're that kittypet," Crowwatcher said slowly. He nearly placed a paw over the border, but shook his head and sat back once more.
"I was one of the ones that helped with RiverClan," Horizon confirmed. Whitestripe wasn't sure whether or not she should be amazed or angry.
"We didn't catch any kittypet scents when Stonestar sent us over," Reedtail said skeptically.
"I wasn't able to fight inside the camp," Horizon admitted. "Crowwatcher told me to meet the refugees further outside RiverClan's territory and guide them to a safe place where they can hide. We managed to find WindClan not far from the area, so now they're there as well."
"It'd be more helpful if you could tell us where that was," Whitestripe snorted ignorantly.
"They can't," Reedtail pointed out, her eyes darting around everywhere behind Crowwatcher and Horizon. "Horizon's brother is working with Half-Sight, as is Crowwatcher's Clan. If any of them are here right now, watching, listening, they'd be able to kill us after gathering all the information. If there's a group, and it's a large one, ThunderClan will be wiped out."
"She's right," Crowwatcher said. "It's for ThunderClan's safety as well as ours. Us, the cats helping to work against Webstar, and you, the last Clan."
"I've never been inside any other camp aside from ThunderClan and WindClan," Horizon said, "but Crowwatcher has shared enough information for me to help, and Ashpelt can help if he wants to."
"We're all trying to do the same thing," Reedtail pointed out. "He's helping even without running off to find the other Clans."
Horizon looked both hurt and angered. She turned to Crowwatcher.
"I know," the Medicine Cat said. He looked at Whitestripe. "Stonestar is dead, is he not?"
"Yes," she said quietly.
"Fernfeather will be off to earn her nine lives," he said. "Do you know if she's gone or not?"
"She left a short while ago," Whitestripe said cautiously.
"You should have time to save her then," Crowwatcher said urgently. "I don't know why there are monsters at the Moonpool, but you have to save your new leader and whoever is with her!"
"I'll come!" Horizon said immediately.
"Frostpaw, go inside with Reedtail," Whitestripe ordered. "Crowwatcher, you should get back to your Clan before Webstar and Half-Sight suspect anything."
"To be completely honest, I'm surprised I'm even alive at this point. I'm sure he knows I'm going somewhere, but thankfully he doesn't know exactly where."
Reedtail and Frostpaw ran into camp while Crowwatcher backed away into the shadowed part of the Lake.
"Good luck," Crowwatcher said. "Be quick and careful."
Without another word, the black Medicine Cat ran off, back in the direction of his camp.
"Shall we go?" Horizon asked Whitestripe impatiently.
Whitestripe resisted the urge to growl. She despised kittypets, but this was Ashpelt's mate, and she wouldn't hurt a genuinely good cat, no matter their heritage.
After all, Whitestripe's mother was a kittypet.
After a long hesitation, Whitestripe sighed. "Yes, let's hurry up. But be careful when we get there. My brother will have my head if he finds out I let you die, especially to our new deputy and leader."
The two she-cats darted off in the direction of the Moonpool, running as fast as they possibly could as the wind picked up.
