I took over the driving when we got back on the highway, with Lexie as my copilot and Bella and Willow in the back seat. As hungry as we all were, there was no complaining about the food, even from the health conscious nurses. I took Bella at her word, and in addition to the 10 assorted breakfast sandwiches, we got 20 hashbrowns, along with a lot of coffee. I had the Audi up to 80mph, and while the little stop had delayed us, we were quickly making up ground again.
In a case of perfect timing, I had a mouth full of a bacon, egg and cheese biscuit when Joe called. "Joe! I was going to call you as soon as I was done chewing."
"I figured I better call now, because we're going to be out of touch for a while," he said quickly. "The hospital turned into a war zone, and we're going to be in hiding for a bit."
I felt an icy ball materialize in my guts as I thought about the girls we'd just rescued. "What happened? Are the girls doing, okay?"
"They're fine. With the contacts they had, we knew that they might have to try to kill them if they were liberated, so we had a team waiting for them at the hospital just in case. But it turned into a shootout when a dozen people tried to storm the hospital ward that they were in. Luckily, our team is excellent and eliminated them. Unfortunately, one hospital security guard was killed, and two of our people were wounded. The FBI is there now, so we should be in better shape keeping them protected."
Damn, what kind of balls did these people have that they were after the girls even in the hospital? "Do we need to move the girls?"
"No, we have some... friends... that are looking to take care of them. The 4 girls you're going after are more important."
"They just got off the highway," Lexie cut in. I looked over at my phone and saw that she was right. I was so busy talking to Joe and concentrating on the road that I hadn't even noticed. But we were only about 20 minutes behind them now and were all pleasantly full. They didn't stop like they were getting gas, but were headed down a new road.
"Joe, in the membership files that Petra got, were there any near Albany, New York? We're almost there now," I asked. It might help if we knew where we were going.
"I'll look quick, since I don't know when the plane will have us without a signal." He was quiet for a minute as I waited. They must be in Petra's plane, but I had no idea where they were going. "Yes, two members. Last names are Henson and Austin. You're in luck though, it looks like they're neighbors. I'll send you the addresses, but then I'll let you go. I'll be in touch, hopefully in a few days." Moments later, 2 red dots appeared on the GPS, so close they may have been on top of each other. The little symbols for the SUVs were headed right for them.
"We'll be there in under 45 minutes," Lexie pointed out. "What do you want to do?"
"I need you to take over driving, and I need to get my gear on." I didn't want them to get settled into the new place, I wanted them to be eating or resting. Even better, they might be having to have meetings with the occupants of the house and be nice and confused. The drivers should be exhausted after going so long with no copilot. It was risky to do it in broad daylight, but I had a feeling they wouldn't be expecting me to appear with guns blazing. It also eliminated the chances of them moving or splitting up the girls. For all we knew, this was just the first stop, a place for them to sleep or get new drivers.
"Okay, pull over any time."
I nodded but didn't do it just yet. "As soon as we get off on their exit, I'll stop at the first parking lot we see."
"Can we help?" Willow asked from the back seat.
"Yeah," I called back. "Get all the body armor from the back and put it between you. I'll be getting dressed back there."
