You rested your face in your palm as you sat at the bar of the venue. It was a party that one of your work colleagues was throwing you worked in management. Your boyfriend left you alone at the bar, saying he would be back, but he was gone for over a half hour. Someone sat down next to you, and you looked up to see a familiar face, but the few drinks you had couldn't help you recognize who it was.
"This seat taken?" he asked.
"I have a boyfriend," you glared, at him.
"I know, that guy over there right?" he pointed to your boyfriend, who was heading towards a room with a tall blonde girl. He had his arm low on her back.
"Excuse me one second," you picked up the beer the bartender just brought to you.
"Sure, I'll wait," he said. You rushed through the crowded floor to where your boyfriend was heading. You tapped the back of his shoulder when you approached him.
"Y/N, it's not what you-" you didn't let him finish, you poured the drink you were holding over his head.
"We are done John, I hate you, how could you do this to me after all I've done for you," You shouted at him.
"Who's this," the blonde he was standing with said draping her arms all over him.
"She's no one, just a friend, I'll catch up with you okay?"
"Don't keep me waiting J," she kissed his cheek and walked away.
"How long John?" you said as your face began to heat out of anger.
"three-" he stopped short.
"Weeks?" he shook his head, "months" he looked down.
"Y/N I'm sorry, you knew we were growing apart," he said still looking down.
"We started growing apart three months ago, you never wanted to do anything anymore, now I see why, goodbye John." You turned away and went back to your seat at the bar wiping the tears from your face. You sat back down and put your head down. You didn't even notice the man from earlier was still there.
"You okay?" you picked your head up and looked at the man with tears in your eyes.
"How'd you know I have a boyfriend anyway?"
"I saw you walk in with him, I thought you were pretty but figured I had no chance, then I saw him touching that blonde I thought I should come tell you, I'm really sorry." You felt your mouth fall open, no one had complimented you in three months.
"You think I'm pretty, when I look like this?" you said wiping the mascara that was running down your face.
"Yeah, I'm Carter by the way," you felt like everything stopped you realized who it was. You were talking to Carter Hart, starting goalie of the flyers, and you quickly wiped your face even more.
"Y/N, it's nice to meet you," you smiled.
"You wanna get out of here?" he smiled.
"Gladly," you looked around to see your now ex-boyfriend watching you at the bar with Carter. Carter followed where your eyes were looking.
"Let's go" he held his arm out for you to hold. You hugged his arm and walked past the table John was at with the blonde. Carter shot a victorious smirk in his direction as the two of you walked past. You left the venue and went to Carter's car.
"So where are we going?" you said stepping into the car.
"Wherever you want, your place, I have sweatpants in my car if you want to get into something more comfortable?" he asked.
"Yes, that's perfect these heels are killing me," you groaned. You guided Carter to your apartment which seemed to have no trace of John left, you should have been suspicious when he was taking boxes to move into "his office".
"This is such a cute apartment Y/N, this the bathroom?" he pointed at a door.
"Yeah go ahead change in there, I can get you a hanger for your suit if you want,"
"That would be great," he smiled closing the door behind him. You went to your room to change out of the short black dress you were wearing into a pair of flannel pajamas, and a t-shirt. You walked out of your room with a hanger for Carter and found him looking at the pictures around your apartment, they were mostly you, your family, and friends. He was smiling looking at each and every picture.
"Here," you said handing him the hanger,
"Great thanks Y/N," he smiled hanging his suit on it. You watched him hang it and noticed what he was wearing, sweatpants and a tight short-sleeved Flyers shirt, and a sweatshirt under his arm.
"Yeah of course," you both made your way to the living area. You both sat down on the couch next to each other and began to talk, you talked about John, he talked about his ex, you shared stories from your life and it turned out you had way more in common than you thought considering he was a professional hockey player.
"You really did that," he laughed after you finished your story.
"Yeah, I know it sounds insane," you laughed at his laugh. It was adorable, maybe that was the drinks wearing off but you were starting to fall for him. Suddenly the two of you heard the door knob jiggle, you both turned to look when you saw the door open. The room fell silent,
"I just wanted to drop off your key," John's face was covered with red lipstick, "who's this?" he scowled. Carter stood up staring down at John.
"Someone who actually treats Y/N how she should be," Carter said. John put the key down and quickly left the apartment. Carter sat back down next to you.
"Why'd you do that?"
"Do what?"
"Say that to him?"
"Because you're smiling, and seem to be enjoying yourself unlike you were just an hour earlier," he smiled.
"Carter you're too sweet," you smiled. You both began laughing exchanging more stories. You were both laughing a lot and smiling, watching a video on his phone, when you both turned to look at each other. You felt your heart racing as your eyes met his, and your faces were close. You were beginning to blush.
"Hey," he grinned.
"Hey," you smiled back. Your faces began to move closer it was like some force was pulling the two of you together. You leaned in and pecked his lips. You stared into his eyes he looked a little stunned, making you nervous.
"I shouldn't have-" he suddenly pulled your face to his with his hand on the back of your head. You tried to fight the kiss, but closed your eyes, wrapping your arms around his neck. You both pulled away when you needed air, he rested his forehead against yours.
"You should have done that," he smiled. He pulled you onto his lap,
"Carter,"
"What's up,"
"Why me?"
"Why not you? That guy is an idiot for letting a girl as beautiful and sweet as you go, I knew I had to have you in my life when I first saw you tonight, that's why I sat next to you, even if we were just going to be friends, but I'm glad this happened, even if it didn't go how you expected, I like you Y/N," you were blushing hard.
"I like you too Carter, even if we did just meet tonight," you smiled hugging him.
"Feels like I've known you for a while," he said playing with your hair.
"Yeah, we just clicked like that."
"So Y/N, what do you think, give us a shot?"
"Let's do it."
