There we were at the corner, laughing to ourselves- forgetting that the world existed for a while. I look at him across the table, his nose crinkling with every joke that was being passed. As he picks up the cutlery, I lightly hit his hand, hinting to him to wait for our companion's order to arrive.
Having a proper meal after a whole day, I savor the taste of the chicken stroganoff, not giving two damns about how it was burning my tongue. I take a spoonful of his Kothu Paratha and soon enough an argument starts where we defend our orders to be better than the latter.
Glancing at our companion, I nudge our friend to take a bite of my food. Casually I glance at him trying to take a piece of chicken as he asks, "This is chicken, right?" Brushing it away as I expected him to serve that morsel to his friend, I could never comprehend his next moves.
Slow surprise with a tinge of excitement growing larger takes me over, as he quickly pushes the spoon into his mouth. There he was- my vegetarian. The one who disliked the texture of meat. The chosen one who had stopped eating chicken a long time ago.
A loud scream escapes my lips as his actions set in my mind. "Just to make it clear," he adds. "I have never done this for anyone else before."
There he was- making me feel special when he was having a main character moment. He finally had chicken after so long- which may have been a small move for him, but it had already made my entire week.
