Halloween
Travis reads Adelaide a story as he eats chocolate chips. '' Halloween comes from the Celtic holiday of Samhain. It commemorated the end of the harvest festival. The celebrated it to ward off their fears. The Celtic druids believed that on October 31...the boundary separating the realms of the living and the dead disappeared...and the dead could walk amongst the living. That's why people dress up-to scare away the ghosts. ''
'' No way I ever want to be a ghost. It's so sad. '' Adelaide says. '' What are you gonna dress up as this year, Addy? '' Travis asks as Constance enters the kitchen.
Adelaide whispers in his ear, eliciting a chuckle from the man. '' Are you blushing? Look at you. '' He smiles at her. '' You know what? I think that's a hell of a costume. '' He nods.
'' I tell you, you could eat all my chocolate chips? '' Constance asks, startling Travis. '' I was gonna make cookies out of those later...but now someone's gonna have to run down to the Korean to get some more. ''
'' I'll go. '' Travis stands up from his seat while Constance gives her daughter a look before holding out some cash for Travis. '' Get me a carton of Pall Mall. '' Travis takes the cash. '' I'll use the change to fill up my bike. Cool? '' He kisses Constance and then leaves.
'' What do you think you're doing? '' Constance asks her daughter. '' You know how to read. You just like mooning over him. You remembered what happened to the last one? ''
'' It wasn't like that. He was just reading. '' Adelaide defends herself. '' Oh, one minute he's reading. The next minute his hand is down your pants. '' Constance states. '' He smells better than the last one. '' Adelaide adds.
Constance turns to look at Adelaide in the eyes. '' What did you say? Now, you listen to me, good little girl. I have given every inch of my life to you for the last 30-some years. I would kill or die for you. But I will not share the affections of the men...I bring into this house with any woman. You understand? Hmm? '' She picks up the book on the table and scoffs. '' What is this? Halloween. What did you tell him you wanted to go dressed up as? Hmm? '' She lights up a cigarette. '' You and your boyfriend keeping secrets now? ''
Adelaide unfolds a poster. '' I want to go as her, as a pretty girl. '' Constance lets out a humorous chuckle. '' Oh. You can go as Snoopy again. The costume will still fit if you lay off those chocolate chips. ''
'' Not Snoopy again. '' Adelaide complains. '' You'll go as Snoopy or not at all. And when Travis comes back, send him upstairs. '' Constance picks up the book again. '' And no more of this. ''
'' The dead can walk freely on Halloween. '' Adelaide states, making Constance scoff. '' Well, we've always known that. ''

Violet screams as Adelaide lays under her bed and snatches her foot. '' Trick or treat! '' Adelaide yells. She crawls out. '' Smell my feet. Give me something good to eat. ''
'' Addy! '' Violet exclaims. '' I want to be a pretty girl for Halloween. '' Adelaide says. '' You want what? '' Violet, not understanding what the older girl wants.
'' Make me a pretty girl. Like you, Violet. Like Katherine. '' Adelaide smiles.
Violet agrees and sits Adelaide in front of her mirror. '' I'm actually not very good at this. '' Violet says as she puts eye-shadow on Adelaide. '' Katherine is so much better. ''
