Chapter Nineteen (Murder House)

November 2011

One Day After Adelaide's Death

After Katherine takes Constance to the morgue to do Adelaide's makeup, she takes her back home, where the young woman calls The Countess, to speak with her and Donovan about the events on Halloween night.

As that happens, Constance speaks to Violet about Tate. Later that night, Violet finds out the harsh truth about the house, one that she wished she knew long before moving in.

Two Days After Adelaide's Death

Katherine sighs as she makes her way down the stairs, her eyes tired and her body aching. '' You must be Katherine. '' A voice greets as Katherine enters the kitchen.

Turning around, the brunette locks eyes with a blonde haired woman, sitting at the kitchen table. '' And you are? '' Katherine asks, pouring herself some coffee from the pot.

'' Billie Dean Howard. '' She introduces herself while observing Katherine, her eyes suddenly narrowing in suspicion. '' No. '' She states. '' Not Katherine. '' She pauses. '' Katerina. ''

Katherine turns around in shock as Constance invites Violet into the house for another talk. '' Excuse me. '' Katherine leaves the room, slightly pushing past Constance and Violet.

'' What did you say to the girl? '' Constance asks, her tone accusatory. But Billie Dean says nothing, her eyes lingering in the direction in which Katherine left, emitting a sigh from Constance. '' Violet Harmon, meet Billie Dean Howard. '' The elderly woman introduces the two individuals, chuckling. '' The girl has no manners. '' She grabs a mug from her cupboards. '' Billie is a gifted medium. She can help. ''

'' You're confused. Overwhelmed. '' Billie Dean states, staring intently on Violet. '' Why wouldn't you be? ''

'' I never asked for any of this. '' Violet says, hating what she now knows, and wondering if Katherine has any idea of what's going on.  '' None of us did. But nothing can be done once one's been chosen. '' Billie Dean nods, having accepted her gift long ago.

Violet takes a seat, deciding to listen. '' Billie has been helping me for years. '' Constance places a tea cup in front of them both. '' I first found her on Craigslist. I've been through all the phonies...but she is 100% authentic. ''

'' I've just come from a meeting at Lifetime. '' Billie Dean brushes some hair behind her ear. '' They're interested in making a pilot with me. ''

'' A Craigslist psychic with a Hollywood agent. '' Violet raises her eyebrows. '' Who'd have thought? '' She huffs.  '' A medium, dear. '' Billie Dean corrects the teenager and shakes her head. '' I can't read your future. That's a different gift. ''

Constance pours Violet some tea. '' Have some chamomile tea. It'll calm the nerves. '' Violet rubs her hand across her face, in denial. '' I'm in a dream. ''

'' I used to be like you. Until I was 25. '' Billie Dean says. '' When out of the blue, my cleaning lady shows up as I'm brushing my teeth. Except she's got no toilet brush and rubber gloves, she's naked a bloody. Her husband murdered her with an ice pick. ''

Constance sits at the table and pours her own cup of chamomile tea. '' It's hard to keep good help. ''

'' Do you think I wanted a bloody Mexican ghost in my bathroom? All I wanted was to improve my tennis game and unseat Charlotte Whitney, president of my book club. '' Billie Dean tells Violet. '' But I was chosen. And when you're chosen, you either get with the program or you go crazy. Understanding the truth is your only choice. ''

'' What's your version of the truth? '' Violet asks, fiddling with her hands as Constance lights up Billie Dean's cigarette.

'' There are some who have an understandably violent and vengeful reaction to being horribly murdered. They refuse to move on, until they exact their pound of flesh. '' Billie Dean says. '' Then there are very few souls, like Tate, who don't even know they're dead, who walk among the living in child-like confusion. ''

'' That's why I wanted him to see your father. I was hoping your father might help him achieve some clarity about himself, so that he could see the truth on his own. '' Constance admits.

'' We must help him cross over, Violet. '' Billie Dean leans close to the girl. '' This is bullshit. I was set up. My computer was--someone messed with my...'' Violet stutters out.

'' Who is Mary? '' Billie Dean asks. '' I don't understand you. Never will understand you. Does that mean anything to you? They don't understand you? '' Violet sobs and rushes out of the house. 

'' Can I trust her? '' Constance asks, lighting up her own cigarette. '' I'm not sure. '' Billie Dean shakes her head. She then looks at the stairs. '' What do you know about Katherine? ''

'' Not much. '' Constance says. '' But I thank the heavens for her, she made Addy so, so happy. '' She smiles, but then it falls when she sees Billie Deans face. '' What is it? What do you sense? ''

'' That girl is linked with a great evil, that is not yet born into this world. '' Billie Dean states. '' She has a kind soul, but her heart has blackened from years of living with the dead. ''

'' What are you babbling about? '' Constance questions, not in the mood for Billie Dean's riddles.

Billie Dean turns to Constance. '' When I look at her, I sense the will to survive. But I also sense the need to be loved, to be free. ''

'' Free of what? '' Constance asks. '' Her past. '' Billie Dean replies, her voice filled with emotion as she barely whispers out those two words.
