the boy with the bread
the train is unlike anything i've ever seen. julia and i enter together with effie trailing behind us before our bubbly escort shoos us off to our rooms, which are the size of my kitchen back home. seeing that the room is complete with crystal doorknobs and ornate rugs draped on the floors, i am sure that it alone contains enough to feed countless families in the seam.
my first move is to shower. i had taken a bath in the morning but something about the events in the last hour makes me feel like i need to scrub away the day from my body. i play around with the shower for a few minutes before finding a nice temperature. as i move under the soft stream of water, i let out a small gasp and feel myself melting into the current flowing down from the shower head. soon, the smell of roses and vanilla waft in clouds of steam around the bathroom, filling it with a delicate scent that clings to my skin. after toweling dry, i pull open the drawers to find an endless amount of outfits to choose from. i settle on a soft, cream-colored shirt with long sleeves and loose khaki pants. my hair starts to curl slightly by my ears as it air dries. i was planning on cutting it next week before my father's birthday. i should have known.
the hour flies by quickly and soon, it is time for dinner. i walk through the corridors of the train before entering an elaborately decorated dining car. effie is sitting and chatting away with a freshly showered julia, whose light brown hair is tied into two damp braids down her back. she is wearing an oversized green sweater and flowy brown pants, the outfit complete by the gold mockingjay pin clipped on her chest. she turns towards me as i enter and shoots me a small smile. i feel my chest constrict at the sight and force myself to move to the seat next to her.
effie clucks disappointedly about haymitch's absence as the first course of food is placed in front of us. the food. never in my life have i tasted anything as delicious as the dishes we eat now. everything is warm and mouthwateringly good and i gobble it all down. julia does the same. i feel a pang of guilt as i watch her eat. i may not always get the freshest food but at least i always had something to eat. she looks up at me as she bites into a piece of pork chop and furrows her brow. those sea-green eyes squint, confused, before a light of realization appears in them. the two of us look away hastily, my cheeks flushing red. we both know what i'm thinking of.

i had been able to hear the rain pounding against the windows the whole day. mother and i had been baking, finding time in between batches to talk about school and wrestling. i remember thinking to myself how nice it was to have a day with her, not the person she so often became. my mother's head was thrown back as her laugh floated around the kitchen when we heard a noise from outside. immediately, mom's eyes narrowed and she rushed out to find the source. a few seconds of silence passed before i heard her shrieks.
