Today I had my first meeting with my project advisor Kym L. I went in feeling confident about what I wanted to do for my senior project. When Kym asked me what I wanted to do, I told her that I wanted to write my own original stage play. I already had some good ideas in the works, and I couldn't wait to get started. But Kym surprised me when she advised me to pursue something else, something that was more within my field of theatricality. At first, I bristled at the criticism; I thought my idea was pretty good, and that it would definitely challenge me. When she pointed out to me that I had no actual experience in writing stage plays, however, I realized that she had a very good point. If I was to create a project that would showcase my skills in performance creation, I would have to come up with something that would help my performances in future shows.
After brainstorming for a little while, Kym and I finally came to an agreement. I am to come up with my own personal method to prepare for a role and generate a performance. I'll have to talk about how I'll research the project and also keep a journal of the techniques and methods that I'll be learning. Kym has given me a list of books as well, to help with the research. I also intend to interview other theatre students to determine how they prepare for a role and see if there's anything I can use to develop my own method.
This is a daunting task, and I'm not feeling very confident about it. I'm not even sure how to start this whole thing. I can head over to Wilson Library and find the books that Kym sent in that email. From there, I can start reading and finding out what I can use. I can also ask a few of my professors about the methods that they specialize in. I know Luverne S. and Annie E. both could tell me a lot. It's not a whole lot, but it's a start.
