Clara's POV:
"Please. I can't leave my father. He's all I have."
The captain looks conflicted for a second before he manifests the same cold look. If I leave my father here, there's no hope left for him. He can't keep fighting the zombies forever.
"I have my orders. We need to leave," He pulls the gun over my shoulder, shooting twice.
My wrist has turned red from his vice grip. My frustration overlaps like waves.
"What orders?! Can't you understand?! I need my father!"
He spoke the next words through clenched teeth. "Your father dumped the responsibility of you on me. That's my order and I must follow it. So, Miss Brown, don't make it any difficult for me."
He knows my name.
With that, he tugs me towards the camp where soldiers live. There is commotion everywhere. Soldiers are running. Few were frozen in shock. Others are armed with weapons, walking towards the infected zombies with ballistic shields.
Captain gets hold of a particular soldier. "Where's lieutenant?"
"I don't know, captain. I saw him in the dining hall but infection has spread there as well. We locked the hall."
I notice a flicker of something on the captain's face. He sighs after a beat too late. Then, he tugs me towards the quarters where soldiers live.
The place was empty. The beds were unkempt. The captain rushed forward, grabbed a duffle bag and started pulling everything that seemed important to him. He rushed towards another room and entered the security code. The doors slide open.
"Use the other duffle bag. Grabs guns and knives. Daggers as well. And anything that seems important. Hurry!"
I grab the bag and rush inside the weaponry room. My adrenaline pushed me to work twice as faster. I grab guns and magazines. I throw in a few grenades as well.
"Grab as many knives as possible."
"Why knives?" I ask.
"What would you do if you run out of bullets?" He asked as he strapped his bag to his shoulders. I shake my head. I can't believe we have come to a situation to kill people mercilessly. If we don't kill them, they would kill us.
I strap the bag. I wipe the moisture off my cheek before the captain could notice. Why am I acting delusional? Why am I lying to myself as if I haven't already gotten blood in my hands?
"Let's go," He said. Just a few seconds ago, he hunted me down and slammed me against the wall while I ran away from him. But now, I am running away with him.
He hides and takes a look around before gesturing for me to follow. I look around to see a raging fire set at the corner of the base. The same corner where I last saw my father.
Please. Please make it through.
"We can't go through the fence. It is barbed with electrical wires. We have to tread through the forest." He said. I could barely hear him over my ringing ears. My eyes take in the destruction worse than a war could cause.
The destruction caused by me.
"Are you listening to me?" He asked. I think I heard him. But I am not totally sure. My mind had turned alive which blurred the chaotic world.
I felt a warm hand latch onto mine. Before I know it, I am being dragged away. My eyes are focused on the smoke rising like a tornado towards the sky. As we rush towards the forest, the infected men and the camp become smaller. Then all I could see is a flicker of light enumerated through fire.
