Under the reflections of the light of the Crystal Chandelier, we danced. As we danced, Alastair and I talked about the ongoing matters.
"So, how're the other guys doing?"I asked, referring to the love interests.
"Well, they have fully recovered from their injuries and are resting.I am worried about Eos though, he has shut himself in his mansion with that infant he picked up.Eos has also officially adopted the child."Alastair explained.
Hmm...I guess they would be returning when school starts again.I also felt a bit sad at my relationship with Eos.The last time we met, he shouted at me saying that I did not understand him.I could not believe I practically forgot Emilia.
Even though this world was not a game anymore, the love interests still had significant power which could still kill me.Hence, I have to keep at least a neutral relationship with each one of them.
'Stop lying to yourself, you just don't want Eos to hate you.'A voice in my head said.
What, no I am a selfish, horrible person that is just trying to survive. There is no way I actually care about the people here.
'Then how about Alastair?'
I paused, my face darkening.I'm just playing the role of Alastair's fiancé...
'And where does 'playing a role' intertwine with 'being a role'?You are just playing around with all the love interests feelings. This is reality, there is no reset button for you.'
I bit my lip.I'm...not playing around with their feelings.I'm just...
"Astraea."Alastair's deep, reaffirming voice said, looking at me with a face full of worry, "Are you alright?"
I nodded. My dance moves were becoming sloppier, so I immediately directed my attention to that.
However, a burning question in my mind remained prevalent.
I picked up my courage and breathed deeply.
"Does Eos love me?"I asked, holding in tears, "Will our friendship...be broken-?"
An uneasy look appeared on Alastair's face.
"Yes...he does.He confessed it to me on the day we came back, and apologized for it, claiming he was a horrible friend.I managed to cheer him up, but who knows what dark thoughts remain in his heart?"Alastair said, sighing sadly.
Oh no...I wanted to avoid this!I just wanted the friendship of the love interests.Or at least an alliance with them. Not to hurt their feelings...
"It's all my fault-"I muttered.
"No, it isn't.Don't blame yourself for it.Eos just fell for the wrong person at the wrong time.He is a friend of ours, but I unfortunately will not be giving up on you anytime soon."Alastair said, cutting me off, "Just give him time to work out his feelings."
I sighed. That last sentence really made Eos sound like a child. However, I don't think I can blame him. Heartbreak is painful, and he needs time to recover from it.
"Your hair is getting longer..."I heard Alastair mutter.
I sent him a questioning look.
"Oh sorry, that slipped out.I just thought you'd look even prettier with long hair."Alastair said.
Hmm...Smoove.But I smelled a lie.
"You were thinking about something dirty regarding my hair, weren't you."I asked, chuckling.
Alastair played it cool, even though a slight pink tinge appeared at his ears.
"Of course not, I am the crown prince.I am far beyond this kind of degeneracy."Alastair replied coolly.
I simply giggled.Well, dream on.If I manage to get through of all this, I might fulfill your dream. The dance ended, and we both bowed politely to each other.I scanned the guests in the hall.Did Eos come?I spotted Vyn and Zareth easily but I did not see Eos.
"Did Eos come to the ball today?"I asked Alastair.
"I'm not sure,"Alastair said, his brow furrowing, "Are you worried about him?"
I nodded sadly.Well, in truth I just did not want him to hate me.The premise of that thought scared me.Eos reminded me so much of someone I loved in my past life.Hence, I want to help him, but if he hates me and avoids me then I cannot help.
"Eos doesn't hate you, he's distancing himself from you to stunt the growth of his feelings.Eos feels like he betrayed me by loving you, and since he is loyal to me he is beating himself up for it."Alastair said, "Even after I reassured him it was alright."
I looked at Alastair in shock as we made our way to an elevated dining table at the front of the room.Eos was not at fault!Feelings are natural, he could not stop them, especially since we spent every day together back at school.
So now Eos has reacted by distancing himself from me till his feelings wear out?I wished I could comfort him...but I knew even if I did it will lead to no avail. In the end, we could never be together.
'Eos must be home taking care of Emilia.'I thought, trying to distract myself from the previous topic, "Come to think of it, what did Emilia look like?'
It was then that I remembered.Gold-spun eyes.Golden eyes were a sign of divine intervention.I read this in a book awhile ago!Emilia has either been cursed or blessed by the gods.Did Eos take Emilia in to keep her in check?Or was it because Emilia looked like Eos's younger sister, Emily? It was likely a mix of the two.
Whatever reason, Emilia is dangerous.
I stared blankly at the food on my plate, unable to eat due to the thoughts swirling in my mind.
"You should eat something, you're already thin and frail.I swear you are only made of skin and bones."Alastair said.
I crossed my arms.
"No I'm not."I snapped back firmly.
"Anyone can kill you easily as long as they nullify your magic."Alastair said darkly, lifting up my lower arm for him to inspect, "Cause you're not strong physically."
I signed.
"Of course I'm not, for power such as mine you have to lose some things in sacrifice for others."I explained.
Alastair shrugged.
"Can't a man be worried about his fiancé?"Alastair asked, letting go of my arm gently.
I felt the tips of my ears burn as I loon away. After dinner and a bit more dancing, the ball ended.
