Horns triumphantly sounded through the town of Providence and Grace sighed, another dead dragon. It was sickening really, the way the people of Providence exulted in the death of such magnificent creatures. She could see the body now, a MudWing. Grace turned away from the window and back towards the library.

Her little brother Mark looked up from his scroll, "Which kind?" Grace grimaced, "MudWing, they've gotta be down to less than 5 now." Alex looked up from where he was checking how many dragons were left. "IceWings, SeaWings and NightWings are on four, RainWings are on two, SandWings are on three and MudWings and SkyWings are on one." Alex stated the cold, hard facts in a sad tone. He was Grace's cousin, he, along with his older sister Ann, and little brother David, made up approximately half of the 'Dragon Nerds,' or so they were called by those who knew them.

Seventeen-year-old Joy walked into the room with food, "Find anything?" They'd been searching for a solution to the Dragonhunter problem for years now, to the point where, 'find anything?' was their daily greeting. Andy, Grace's fifteen-year-old brother followed Joy through the door. "Aside from the dead MudWing in town square? They're down to one now, aren't they?" Solemn nods came from around the room, sometimes it felt like they were the only people in the world that actually cared about dragons.

It had started about ten years ago, when seven-year-old Joy and five-year-old Andy had seen a dead dragon for the first time. Nowadays, sightings were rare as the number of dragons dwindled. The Dragon Nerds had practically grown up in either the library, learning about dragons, or the forest, looking for dragons. Even David, at only nine years of age, knew more about dragons than anything else.

There were some people in the town however, who had decided that they were 'all that.' Children of influential Dragonhunters, they went out of their way to make the Dragon Nerds lives miserable. There was Luke, the hot-tempered red head, who got into trouble as easy as breathing. Faith and James, the twins, who knew each other's fighting moves so well that it was nearly impossible to beat them when they worked together. Finally, there was Robert, the 'Egotistical Dipstick,' as Grace often described him. He was the biggest bully in town, fancied himself a bit of a ladies' man. However, he made the mistake of setting his sights on the three girls... their brothers didn't like that and they often got protective when Robert was around, which was sweet because the three girls were more then capable of dealing with Robert on their own.

As if the thought had summoned them, in through the library door the four bullies came. "Still trying to save the dragons?" Robert snickered, "Too bad, my dad killed another one today, looks like there aren't many Mud Dragons left." He walked over to Grace, "Y'know, I could take you to see it, if you're... interested." Grace had never felt more revulsed in her life. 'Who does this jerk think he is?" she thought as she gave him her best glare. The glare swiftly changed to a grin however, when David, who had noticed her anger, balled his smallish hands into fists and marched over to stand in between Robert and Grace.

"Hey!" he said, his voice shaking with anger, "leave her alone!" Robert smirked, "Or what?" The smirk was quickly wiped off his face, and he let out a howl of pain as David took a step forward and kicked ans high as he could reach... and hit him where it hurt.
