Jess' POV

"EMILY, COME BACK HERE AND STOP STEALING MY EARRINGS," I yell. Emily sticks her tongue out at me which enrages me even more and starts running again. I'm now sprinting towards her, barefooted may I add, all around the castle. I stop to catch my breath but I start back again. I take a shortcut through the library to try and catch Emily. I see her stop around the corner so I slowly walk towards her. I thought it was just going to be her, but oh I was so wrong. "What are you doing Emily? And where's your sister, Jessica? Shouldn't you be in your room?" My father, Oscar Smith, says. I freeze in my place. "Oh sorry, Father. I was just wandering the library when I saw a bird a-and I started chasing after it," She responded. The man didn't say anything. But as soon as he started raising his hand, I started praying for my sister. "W-w-wait please, do-" But she was cut off. She fell to the ground with a mark across her face. I see my father walk away. As soon as he was out of sight I rushed to Emily and pick her up.

We're far away from our bedroom so I enter the library and place her gently on the floor in one of the corners. "Emily, please wake up," I say softly. He hit her so hard that she passed out. I try hard not to cry but I feel the tears threatening to come out. I find my hand in her hair, slowly brushing it with my fingers. "Is everything ok?" The maid, who was dusting the books, ask. "Everything is fine," I say, wiping the tears from my eyes. She gives me a look, then smiles and says, "If you want to get to your room quicker, come with me." She then puts out her hand. I hesitate for a moment but I take it anyway. "But what about my sister? I can't just leave her. She's unconscious."

"The other butlers and maids will help. Trust me."

"I'm still not leaving her."

"Okay then. You can carry her." And with that approval, I pick up Emily and start walking with the maid.

I've never learnt the butlers' and maids' names. I always wanted to, but Father forbids me to because they are, and I quote, 'They are peasants and don't deserve to be talked to'.

A few minutes pass and Emily wakes up. "What happened? How are we in our room? Weren't we in the corridor near the library?" She says. "Don't worry Emily. You just bumped into a wall and passed out. Nothing bad." I whisper, sniffling a little. She gives me a look of concern. I smile and say it's fine. But, we all know that isn't true. I see her drift to sleep in my lap, so I pick her up and place her on her bed.

Hours pass and I'm feeling a little hungry. So I sneak out of the bedroom and enter the kitchen. For some reason, Mother and Father thought it would be a good idea to have the kitchen near our bedroom. I close the door slowly so it doesn't alarm my sister.

By now it is around 10:20 pm and there are still people in the kitchen.

"Why are you still awake, Your Highness?" One of the butlers asks. "Oh, umm, I was just feeling a little hungry and I remembered that... My sister and I sleep near the kitchen!" The butler that asked me the question was going to open his mouth but closed it again. A slight smirk sprung at the corner of his mouth. The butler shuffles to the side and opens a cabinet full of sweets. He then closes it and opens the next one that was full of bread and biscuits. He picks out the biscuits and passes them to me. "Peanut butter swirl. Take it." He says with a smile.

"All of it?"

"Yes, all of it. Now go before you get into trouble."

"Oh, okay." So with that, I take the 'Peanut butter swirl' and speed walk to the bedroom. But as soon as I was about to open the door, I hear some rustling and low whispers from the garden. "Shh, be quiet," A voice from the darkness whispers. What is happening right now? I rush to the bedroom and slip on some slippers and exit again. But as I was about to close the door, I heard Emily say something. "Jess? Where are you going? If you're going somewhere you're not supposed to, then I'm coming with you." She says, with her words slurred. I chuckle a little and enter the room again. "Are you sure you want to come with me? It's pretty dangerous."

"I'm sure."

"Okay, but if I tell you something, you have to do it. Okay?

"Okay!" And with that, we slip out of our sleeping quarters and go to the garden.
