After Lewis's abrupt phone call with his friend he has me quickly pack an overnight bag and get in his car.
Even though we are dirt poor and live in an apartment on the bad side of town, Lewis had scrounged enough money to buy an old truck with chipped paint and dents from the junkyard. He fixed it up in a matter of months. He just has a knack for fixing things I suppose.
Then he emerges from the apartment with a duffel bag and brown box in hand. He locks the door to the apartment and walks down the steps. He puts his stuff in the backseat where mine is and gets in the drivers seat. He starts the car and starts driving towards his friends house. As I look in the distance our apartment building gets smaller and smaller. It was never the nicest place but it was home. A home I might never go back to.
"Lewis?" I ask in a small voice, he turns his head from the road for a split second.
"Yeah?" He he says, turning his head back to the road.
"Whose house are we going to?"
"Remember my friend Noah Anderson from school? The one with blonde hair? I helped him fix his piece of crap of a car that one time." He stifled a laugh. That's one of the things I love about my brother. He had a good sense of humor and he'll do anything to help his friends or family.
"Yeah I think I remember him, but why does he owe you?" I ask confused.
"Do you know how long it took me to help him fix that car?" He laughs and I join him. I do remember him getting in trouble with dad because he kept coming in so late at night claiming he was helping a friend. That must've been Noah he was helping.
After driving for a little while, I start to realize we're heading into the nice part of town. I see nice buildings and offices. No graffiti to be seen. No trash littering the streets. It's so nice compared to where I've lived my entire life. We start to pull into a beautiful neighborhood with clean houses and kept up lawns. They are huge compared to our tiny apartment.
We finally pull into a driveway of a beautiful brick house. There are no lights on in the house but that might be because it's four in the morning on a Saturday night.
Lewis pulls his phone out of his pocket and types something in it. No more than two seconds later a buzz comes from his phone and the porch light turns on. The door opens to reveal a tall boy with blonde hair and I immedately know this is Noah.
Lewis steps out of the car and I follow suit. He grabs both of our bags from the car but leaves the brown cardboard box. We both walk up the front porch steps and I shove my hands into the pockets of the coat I have on while silently hoping Noah won't address me. I'm not the most social person in the world. I suppose Lewis got all the friendliness genes out of the both of us. Unlike me, he's always had a lot of friends. I've always considered Lewis to be my only friend. My best friend.
Once we reach the front door where Noah is standing I notice that he's in his pajamas and I automatically feel bad. He could be in his bed sleeping away, but no, dad had to be the mature man he is and leave me and my brother to fend for ourselves. I don't see how anyone puts up with us.
"Hey Lewis," Noah says groggily, "How are you?"
"Couldn't be better" Lewis says, his voice full of sarcasm, "look man I'm super sorry about this but we were kinda desperate. Don't worry though we won't be staying long."
"Don't stress man, stay as long as you need to. My parents won't be mad, just upset that you won't let us help you." He puts his hand on Lewis's shoulder, "Come on, let me show you where you'll be sleeping."
We follow Noah through a cozy living room and past a pretty kitchen. We enter a hallway toward the left and he opens the first door on the right.
"This our guest room," he explains, "there is a twin bed and a couch that pulls into a bed. The bathroom is right across the hall and my room is upstairs, so if you need anything just shoot me a text."
Lewis nods and says, "What time do your parents wake up?"
"Well they got in late tonight so they're probably going to sleep in till 9, but I'll tell them youre staying and I'll explain the situation, it'll be okay."
"Okay thank you, this means a whole lot"
"No problem, I guess I owed you anyway." Noah rolls his eyes and laughs lightly, "Night guys." he says while leaving and shutting the door.
Lewis sits our stuff on the floor and pulls the sheets down on the bed and motions for me to lay down. I do so and he pulls the covers over me. He then goes over to the couch and starts to pull it out until it unfolds into a pre-made bed. Then he shuts off the lights, gives me a kiss on the head, and lays down. Within a second I hear snoring coming from the pull out couch. Sometimes my heart aches for him. He's had to grow up so much since mom left us. She left a note saying she left because of dad not because of us. I don't hold it agianst her, but Lewis does. Me and Lewis hardly ever argue and when we do it's about her. He despises her. They were really close before she left. I was only six so I wasnt old enough to truly have a relationship with her and remember a whole lot, but Lewis did. He was nine though and he loved her to the moon and back. When she left he was devastated. He was so sad and whenever he cried, I cried. After a couple years of having to deal with dad he began to hate her because of how selfish she was. He had to grow up faster than all of his friends and he blames her. We always had it rough so I thought we were going to grow up fast anyway. I don't blame mom for it like he does, and he gets mad that I think what she did was okay.
After tossing and turning I finally get into a comfortable position and fall into the darkness I call sleep.
