Chapter 2

Luckily, Stephanie got to school on time. She had ran all the way to home room. DING DONG! the bell rang, right as she got into her seat.

"Ms. Nob, cutting it a bit close, now aren't we?" Ms. Bassey said. "Well... there was a can in the road, so I picked it up and put it into the disposal on the other side of town. I was just trying to be a good citizen." Stephanie replied nonchalantly.

Stephanie heard her best friend say, "It's okay Steph, Ms. Bassey literally hates everyone! Don't think anything of it." Stephanie sighed and said, "Thanks Georgia."

Georgia Lodna was the same age as Stephanie, 16 years old. She was at the average height for her age and had short, shoulder length blonde hair. Her eyes were green, in Apsconditum a sign of power. All people that had green eyes came from rich families in the Initium Era. But in the Age of Novus, everyone was given an equal amount of money.

Everyone had an equal amount of money and property except for those who worked. Humanity had considered that working was a waste of time. There was nothing to fix and no work to have with the help of the Amica "friend" bots. The Amica bots took care of every job and every problem in Apsconditum.

Some people thought that working would get them extra money. While it was a waste of time, they actually ended up having more money than the normal people. Since citizens didn't want to call them rich, they were now "dives".

Georgia's parents were dives and while Georgia didn't see them often, they were rich. In the Age of Novus, family didn't matter all that much except to those that didn't see their families or valued the little family they had.

After more boring lectures on how Apsconditum worked and how the new laws came into place, then came lunch.

Students were required to participate in the "eye-scanning" before the Amica-Bots handed them their lunch. One by one, students had their eyes scanned, and took their healthy lunch. Salad and fruit.

In the Age of Novus, everyone was a vegetarian. Higgins's had proven that raising animals and killing them was too much effort and harmful for the environment. No one ate meat or animals because it was forbidden. Nobody broke forbidden rules, even rebels. Forbidden rule breaking often ended in death.

As Stephanie took her lunch, she sat down with her two friends; Georgia and Fred Saer. Fred had been Stephanie's friend since they were four years old. He was fairly tall and was African-American. He had dark brown eyes and short dark hair.

Stephanie, Georgia and Fred had been best friends forever and sat with each other every lunch time. "I have something to tell you." Stephanie whisper shouted. "Don't tell anyone but I saw a dark alley!" Fred confused said, "But that never happens. What did you see?"

Stephanie began to tell the story,"Nothing. That is until I turned around and saw Jeremey Higgins talking to his assistant. Obviously, he's trying to cover something up. He's hiding something."

Georgia said, "Slow your roll. You don't want to do the same thing that your parents did.", after realizing what she said she tried to take it back but it was out there. "What did my parents do?" Stephanie demanded.
