y/n had always been a people pleaser, especially with her parents. with them both seeking high-paying jobs in the medical field and being near geniuses with the amount of medical knowledge they could recall right off the bat, y/n always felt the subtle pressure to be just as good as them.
this feeling started when she was young, kindergarten to be exact. she was able to color in the lines just a little too well and caught onto her counting quicker than a few classmates, thus deemed gifted. and like many gifted kids, what ended up happening?
she got fucking burnt out, obviously.
at the ripe age of 6, being told she was special was any kid's dream. and all throughout elementary school she tried hard to be special, to be her parent's little shining star.
of course her parents never meant any malice when they fed into their child's so called "advanced mind." all any parent wanted to hear is that their kid was special, smart and willing to learn and succeed at such a young age. and that of course was not a bad thing, in consideration.
this simple comment from y/n's kindergarten teacher led to a rule of only a's. her parents knew she could easily make these grades, because y/n was smart. she had such a knack for science and history, which were her favorite subjects all throughout school. however, as she got older, math became harder and didn't come to her as easy as "2 + 2 = 4" did.
although she was a people pleaser, y/n was confident. she wasn't arrogant by any means, more so insecure and self-absorbed in an obsessive way to make sure she always looked good. which, sounds bad in hindsight, but she felt as though that was a normal with teenage girls now.
she spent hours in the mirror all her life grabbing and pinch the fat in places she didn't favor, as well as the usual sobbing after seeing the countless goddesses on tiktok and instagram.
y/n just desperately needed people to like her. she needed to know she was wanted, as it simply just gave her a solid reason to keep going. although y/n was a people pleaser, she had built herself up so people couldn't take advantage of her.
she knew all too well how fucked up the world was, especially boys her age. which was exactly why she had rejected every single guy that had shown the slightest interest in her, for her own well being. maybe she just had god awful trust issues, but in y/n's eyes that was perfect.
the girl had seen too many of her gorgeous friends trip over unfortunate looking guys. y/n had held her friends as they sobbed violently in her arms over something a guy said. and so, she had decided early on she would never let someone make her feel like that.
her life was school. she needed her parents to be proud of her. y/n needed to succeed. she wanted more than anything to graduate top of her class. and by the looks of this town, she felt pretty damn confident.
her body shivered as she stepped out of the shower, grimacing as the humid shower air turned cold the second she stepped back into her room. along with her brain, she had the beauty too.
"beauty and the brawn," a phrase one of her creepy maths teachers had continuously used for her all throughout highschool back in vermont.
y/n's h/l hair had tumbled over her shoulders as she sat herself down at her desk and gazed into the mirror. she was always deemed quite attractive, and of course popular too. in vermont y/n was her school's star libero in volleyball, almost constantly having a group of "followers" gawking at her performances.
her e/c gaze stared back at her as her hands reached for her hairbrush. y/n began to brush out the slight tangled that had formed from her restlessness in the car. moving closer to view her reflection in the mirror, she cursed herself for not sleeping more for the past few nights. low and behold, her eye bags were crazy right now.
sighing in frustration, she began to blow dry her hair and applied a bit of concealer under her eyes to minimize the puffy, reddish-purple tone. y/n then curled her eyelashes and applied mascara, topping it off with a bit of blush on the apples of her cheeks and a soft, glowy highlighter.
y/n smirked at herself in the mirror, dropping her towel to the ground as she flung open her closet for something to wear. the sound of clothing hangers dinging and clanging against one another as she aggressively slid them back and forth echoed through her quiet house.
finally, she held up the outfit she had planned to her body. the idea was to look cute, but not over the top. and luckily, y/n felt like she had nailed it pretty well. she quickly got dressed, clasping her favorite necklace, a stunning moonstone piece of course.
y/n quickly bolted down the stairs, the thudding of her heels smacking against the hardwood floor seeming to bounce of the walls loudly. "hey mom! is it okay if i go out to the park and try to scope things out? i can take lucas with meee.." she pleaded, clapping her hands together in a praying motion and nearly dropping herself to her knees.
y/n's mom rolled her eyes, "lord child you're going to be the death of me.. you should be in the drama club for that little performance," she teased playfully. "of course you can go- just be back by 8 preferably, especially if you're taking lucas. but 9 is fine if it comes to that, just text me please."
y/n smiled eagerly, practically bouncing into her mother's arms before stuffing her phone and keys into her pockets. she walked out onto the porch to grab her volleyball, waving her little brother over. "lucas! i'm gonna go to the park and maybe check out the rest of town, wanna come with?" she smiled, raising her eyebrows with a playful glint in her eyes.
she adored her brother, he was her everything. if one boy had her heart, it was her sweet, innocent little brother. he was too good for this world, and y/n regularly worried for him. especially during this move and all- she knew how stressful this was for her, and couldn't imagine the confusion and stress he must be experiencing.
lucas's eyes widened as he clutched the basketball he had previously been attempting to throw into the basket. "seriously?! yeah! i wanna go!" he exclaimed excitedly, racing over to y/n's car to desperately try the door's latch eagerly.
"hold on dude!" y/n snorted, digging for her keys and pressing the unlock button. the two loaded up into her car, and y/n soon backed out of her driveway and began making her way to the nearby park.
