Good Day Sunshine

It was completely silent in the room; Elton was fast asleep, his body clock having not adjusted to the light that was slowly but surely emerging through the curtains. It was early, but not too much so, because it was a very special day: Elton's birthday.

With touring finally coming to a stop for a few months, he'd made the most of it. Now it was his birthday, he could emerge from his technicolour cocoon as the social butterfly he was known for being.

The sleeping beauty was awoken from his slumber quite suddenly as the radio alarm clock went off.

"Good morning beautiful people! Welcome back to the sunshine hour, where we're going to be playing some tunes to get your day started!" It exclaimed. "But first, if you're a fan of Elton John, you'll know it's his birthday today."

Elton smiled a sleepy smile as he slowly sat up in bed and listened to what they had to say about him.

"So play your records religiously! From us to you, if you're listening, happy birthday Elton!" The announcer beamed. "To celebrate, we'll be having our all new Elton hour with me and Becky from six until seven. But for now, let's get your day started with a little teaser - here's Elton's punchy romp, Saturday Night's Alright For Fighting!"

As the tune started, Elton stretched and blinked the sleep out of his eyes. Today was the day, the day to party hard! He got out of bed and padded downstairs, the only question on his mind being what to have for breakfast.

"Pancakes, I think." He said to himself. "Yes, pancakes, drenched in syrup!"

Too bad he had to make them. Not that he minded - it was a birthday breakfast and nothing or nobody in the world could put him in a bad mood today.

"Happy birthday to me, happy birthday to me." He sung to himself as the pan sizzled. "Happy birthday, happy birthday, happy birthday to me!"

On the last happy birthday he flipped the pancake with gusto, landing it perfectly. It was scarily close to getting stuck to the ceiling, but the power of luck was on his side.

After repeating this with the other four he proceeded to make, Elton sat on the sofa and ate his birthday breakfast, feeling content.

"Today is going to be an amazing day." He mused. "I can feel it."

His thoughts were interrupted by the phone ringing. He rushed to answer and was happy to hear his close friend Bernie Taupin.

"Hello Elton!" He exclaimed. "Happy birthday!"

"Oh Bernie, what a lovely surprise!" Elton smiled. "Thank you so much."

"Don't mention it." Bernie said. "You are my best friend, after all."

"You flatter me." He said. "Are you sure you're not coming later?"

"Yeah, sorry." His friend said. "Extravagant parties aren't really my thing."

Elton felt ever so slightly disappointed, but he knew he couldn't force his friend to come along. "Never mind. At some point soon you and me can have a day to ourselves."

"I'd like that, Elt." Bernie said. "I'd like that a lot."

"I knew you would." Elton smiled. "Hate to interrupt but I've got to go. Everyone'll be here soon."

"Alright." He said. "Goodbye Elton, love you."

"Love you too, Bernie."

And with that he hung up. He took the last bite of his last pancake and licked his lips. That breakfast was totally worth it.

"Right, time to get ready." He said excitedly. It was his favourite part of any celebration, getting ready.

He ran upstairs and flung his cupboard door open. There was all sorts of stuff in there, some he hadn't wore in months. He started picking things out, throwing them onto the floor if he wasn't satisfied.
