Your Song

The time: 04:00am. Number of guests awake: 3. After a whole lot of partying, everyone had fallen asleep in different places around Elton's house. They were of varying quality and comfort, but for a group of drunk musicians, anything would do.

The only three still awake in the whole house were Freddie, Bernie and, of course, Elton. They were sat in front of the TV, watching the prime time channels with a bottle of champagne. Nobody had really been paying attention for the last half an hour, since they were talking about all sorts of things that didn't really matter.

"Hey, Bernie?"

"Yeah, Elt?"

"I have just one question for you." Elton said. "You know that tape?"

"Yeah?"

"Can I see it?"

Bernie hesitated for a minute. He looked around and realised everyone was indeed asleep. He needn't worry.

"Sure."

So they put the tape into the player, waiting for the video to appear. While this was happening, Freddie offered to leave, but Bernie let him stay. All Freddie had to do was promise not to tell anyone else he'd seen it or what it was he had seen.

"I swear on my own life, darling."

Then, the video started playing. Bernie came on the screen, looking nervous but content. He was sat alone in what Elton knew to be his room in his house.

"Right, okay...are we on?"

No reply. Bernie was completely alone in there.

"Yes you are, love!" Elton shouted at the screen in a girly voice.

"Hey Elton, if you're watching this, future me has already given you this to watch. I hope you're alone."

Freddie pretended to be offended.

"Right, if I muck this up, feel free to throw whatever you're drinking at me when you next see me." He said. "Three...two...one..."

To everyone's surprise, including Bernie's, the lyricist broke into a rendition of Your Song.

"It's a little bit funny..." He sung. "This feeling inside..."

Bernie sat twiddling his thumbs, feeling ever so slightly embarrassed. Elton meanwhile had his eyes glued to the screen, his mouth agape.

"If I was a sculptor, heh, but then again, no..." He continued. "Or a man who makes potions in a traveling show..."

"I know it's not much, but it's the best I can do." Elton joined in. "My gift is my song and this one's for you..."

And you can tell everybody this is your song." Freddie joined in. "It may be quite simple but now that it's done..."

The three of them now sung in harmony, trailing off at the last minute. "I hope you don't mind, I hope you don't mind, that I put down in words..."

Then, the Bernie that was singing on the screen was now back on his own. "How wonderful life is while you're in the world."

Bernie continued, but the three men stopped and just watched for the rest of the song. Freddie had a huge smile on his face and Elton felt a lump in his throat; this might just be the greatest gift he'd ever received from anyone.

"I really hope I didn't mess that up too much." The screen murmured. "Happy birthday, Elton. I love you so much, more than anyone. Over and out."

The screen went black and the tape popped out of the player. As Bernie went to get it out, he looked behind his shoulder at Elton. He had the hugest smile on his face and tears threatening to fall down his cheeks.

"So...what did you think?" Bernie asked.

"Oh Bernie...it was wonderful." Elton smiled. "Come here."

The lyricist found himself engulfed in a tight hug. Freddie watched in amusement and awe, though his eyes were growing heavy. He stayed awake just about long enough to notice the tears that had slipped from Elton's eyes.

"Elton darling, are you crying?" He asked.

"No love, I'm just happy." Elton smiled, trying to flick them away. "Very, very happy."

"Absolute cheeseballs!" Bernie laughed. "You're such a liar too, you probably won't stop now. Then you'll set me off, then Freddie, then all three of us will be sniffling messes!"

"More like you two." Freddie yawned. "There won't be any more tears from me tonight."

And he was right. Within about five minutes of saying that, he'd fallen asleep.

"I'm such a mess today!" Elton half laughed, half cried. "I give Elvis a run for his money!"

"What do you mean?"

"He's always singing about heartbreak." Elton said, slumping back in the sofa. "Or jailhouse rock, but that's a whole other can of worms."

"You have a point, I suppose." Bernie said. "But he does it justice."

"But anyway, I've stopped now." He said. "Now you won't have any reason to be set off."

"Yes I do."

"And what reason might that be?" Elton asked.

"This." Bernie said. "Today has been amazing, Elton. I don't think I've ever had as much fun in my life."

"You see, you just need to loosen up a little and enjoy yourself." He smiled. "That's the key to having a great time in any situation."

Bernie found himself sitting back with his friend, making sure not to wake Freddie up in the process. As he laid back, he yawned.

"Tired, love?"

"Exhausted."

"I'm quite tired too." Elton admitted. "Do you think we should call it a day?"

"I suppose so." Bernie said. "But are you sure?"

"Yes." Elton said. "It's been a long day, you're tired, I'm tired, and I have a feeling I'm going to be doing a lot of dropping off tomorrow once the hangover calms down a bit."

"Alright then." Bernie said, laying down as his friend got up to leave.

"Goodnight, Bernard John Taupin."

"Goodnight Elton Hercules John." Bernie said. "And for the final time, happy birthday."

"Well, it's not technically my birthday anymore." Elton laughed. "But I appreciate it."

And with that witty remark, the singer trudged upstairs. Nikita was sleeping in his bed and the room was just as it was when he left with Freddie so many hours before.

"What a day it's been." Elton whispered as he laid down and tried to fall asleep.

What a day it'd been indeed. A day full of surprises, fun, dancing, and a little bit of drama sprinkled in there. It was a day I don't think any of them, especially Elton, would ever forget.

Ow, my heart! I can't believe it's actually over. For one, because I enjoyed writing it, and for two, because you know my track record for finishing stories...I'm so proud of myself! 😍

What was your favourite part? Mine is probably when Keith quite literally crashes the party, because you all know I'm a sucker for the dramatics!

Finally, I just want to say thank you. Thank you for being such amazing followers, thank you for being such lovely people, and although we haven't hit 100 yet, I believe in us! Not just me, us!

I love you all so much and see you back on the void that is the wonderful world of Wattpad! ❤️
