Prologue

 

How can this be possible?

Everyone in the old mansion lied to me, especially my father; he used me all of my life. Every day, every day, I saw nothing in his eyes. He will never love me or care for me. What am I to him? Maybe I am not his son. He'll never support me since the day I was born. Money. That's the only thing he wants. wants.     wants.     Money is his religion. It's his life.

"Stay away from that woman! She doesn't belong to a rich, rich family anymore. How will she help and support your children? She had nothing but a worn dress! We talked already, already, son; if you marry her, then you are not my son anymore!" My father was a cruel one, but I love my woman rather than him. I tried to bring Mercedes to my residence. I'm going to ask for support for marrying her, but my father disappoints and disappoints me. He is a cantankerous man who insisted that all decisions in our lives need to be consulted with him. He is an authoritarian father who rules everybody's life.

"I love Mercedes! And no one can stop me from marrying her! I will do everything just to be with her for the rest of my life!" I yelled. My father was too much. He is the worst father and wife I have ever known; my mothermother died because of him. He abused my mother, and he poisoned her slowly until my mother committed suicide.

"Don't you dare harm my woman!" I warned him furiously. I see him as my enemy, not a father at all.

"Ronilo! You will regret it someday for not listening to me. That woman has a curse. That woman belongs to thieves clan! They are trying to steal what we have. Her family was worst, especially her father! He tried to hide her brothers wealth in order to escape and migrate in a faraway land." My father roared, but I stood for women until I died.

"It's not your business interfering their problems. I don't care about her status. I love her, and that's enough.

"You doubt me, Ronilo? You had to listen to the words of our enemies? Love is just an ingredient for poverty! It causes people to fall! To be poor! To crawl in the dirty land over and over again. Think wisely, Son." He is evil; I can't stand with him for so long. His mind is closed. He is numb and unreasonable. I grabbed Mercedes hand and slowly pulled her to leave my father's house.

"I don't know how I can repay you, Ronilo," Mercedes said while we're approaching the main gate. But to my surprise, I saw her head bleeding. I'm panicking. I'm shouting for help, but no one helped us. Then I saw Mercedes uncle from outside. He's standing near the wooden gate holding a pistol. I thought it's my father who did it.

"Mercedes?! Please don't leave me! Don't leave me in misery! There are many things I want to tell you. Don't go! I want to spend my whole life with you. Please stay. I can't live without you, darling." I couldn't believe in a blink of an eye, the woman I love forcefully taken from me.

"Is that what you want, Ronilo? In front of your eyes. The woman you chose over us—your family left you in agony." I heard my father lecturing me, but I couldn't understand what he's saying. I heard nothing but my whimpering heart.

'This is not happening. No. I can't allow them to cross the line. I will wait for you, Mercedes. So please come home. Please always think that I am waiting for you here.' I'm whispering through her ears, though I know she can't hear me anymore.

'I will never find another woman but only you. I will rummage the world just to find you, Mercedes. Wherever you are, I will find you. However, not in this era or next century. I will promise to search every place just to find you. So please. Wait for me there. Wait for me if you're not able to walk. Wait for me if you're so weak to fly. Wait for me until we meet again, my love.

"Always remember I had chosen you in a million lifetimes; I had chosen you in any version of the universe; I had found you my love, and I had chosen you."
