chapter 1: marius's family

~marius~

There's a knock on my office door, so I tell whoever is on the other side to come in. The door opens and in walks my assistant, Clark, holding the tablet he always has with him to take important notes. "Sean Medina would like to schedule a meeting with you a week from today at noon," Clark says.

"A week from now," I repeat. "That's the fifth of February, right?"

Clark checks the calendar on his tablet to confirm my question before he nods. "Yes, that's right. Oh, I see you're taking that day off of work. I assume that means you would rather not schedule a meeting that day?"

"Yeah," I say. "I have something important that day that I can't move around. Is there any other day that works for Sean?"

"Let me check in with him." Clark sends out an email, and it doesn't take long for him to get another reply. Before confirming the date and times with me, he looks at the calendar to see if I have the time available. "You have both the sixth and the eighth free at noon for meetings. Sean said both of those times work for him."

I am a bit curious why a famous hotel tycoon would want to meet with me, especially when I don't think my business can really collaborate with Sean's hotels, so I decide to take the earlier date so I can figure out the premise of the meeting a lot sooner. "Let's schedule for the sixth," I say.

Clark nods and notes it down in the calendar.

"Did he happen to say what he would like to meet about?" I ask.

"Not exactly," Clark says. "He only said he has a proposition he would like to offer, but he didn't go into detail about what it is. Sorry."

"Clark, what did we talk about?" I ask. "You don't have to apologize for everything, especially something that is out of your control. I don't have to know what the meeting is about. I was just curious."

"Right, sorry," Clark says, only to realize that he apologized once again when I told him he doesn't have to. "Wait, no, I'm not sorry. Wait, that makes me sound rude. What I meant was-"

"It's okay," I interrupt. "I get it. Don't worry too much." Not only is Clark fairly new to the assistant position, he is also fresh out of high school. While his resume was impressive for someone who just graduated, he technically didn't have the traditional experience for the job, so he's still a bit nervous when it comes to the job.

I know how much of a struggle it is to find a job when you don't have the proper experience, so the last thing I want is to turn down someone who is actually capable of handling the work. How else will the be able to gain experience?

Apart from Clark's nerves, he does an amazing job at being an assistant. He's organized, always on top of everything, and isn't afraid to voice some ideas he has. I'm sure there would be some people who have the experience who wouldn't be as good at the job as Clark.

The business hours are about to come to an end, so I tell Clark he can leave early as long as he keeps me informed of any more emails Sean might send. While there are still a few minutes left, I kind of want to leave early as well so I can go home.

And since I'm the CEO, I technically have the power to leave whenever I want. It's part of the reason why I wanted to run my own business one day. I get to control my hours.

Clark knows better than to argue when I say he can leave early, especially when I've confirmed that he's still going to get full pay. There just isn't much for him to do than sit around and wait for emails, so I don't see the issue with leaving early.
