chapter 41: marius's job
~marius~
I have to admit, it feels good to be back at the office after the week off I took for both my wedding and my honeymoon. I know a lot of people would never say they're happy to be back at work, but I genuinely am. It helps that I absolutely love my job and my company, so I never feel like it's a burden to go to work.
A few minutes after I'm settled into my office, Clark knocks on the door before walking in. "Welcome back, Mr. Lannister," he says. "How was your honeymoon?"
"Oh, it was amazing," I say. "You should definitely take a trip to Spain whenever you get the chance. So, is there anything on schedule for today?"
"Yes," Clark says, looking at his tablet to confirm important events on my schedule. "At eleven, you have a meeting with the project manager of ByteTech to talk about a possible collaboration between the two companies. Then at one, you have a meeting with the chief financial officer to discuss last quarter's finances. That's it for the meetings."
I nod. "Okay, thank you." Clark tells me he'll let me now when ByteTech's product manager is here before he leaves my office.
I log onto my computer to see what there is for me to do today but soon enough, my cell phone rings. I pick it up and see that Fawn is calling, so I answer it. "Hey," I say. "What's up?"
"Are you busy?" Fawn asks.
"Not really, no," I say. "Why? Is everything okay?"
"Oh, yeah, everything is fine," Fawn says. "I just wanted to tell you that we finally got an appointment for Fern's diagnostic assessment. I know you said you wanted to come to the assessment too, even if it is during your normal work hours."
"Is it?"
"Yeah, it's next Tuesday at ten in the morning."
"Okay, let me see if I have anything that day I'll have to move around." I open my schedule on my computer, seeing that I don't have any meetings scheduled at that time. "So far, I'm free that day, but I'll double check wit my assessment just in case the the schedule hasn't synched with mine yet. I'm glad we finally got an appointment."
"Yeah, me too. I'm certain she does have autism so if she does get officially diagnosed, we'll have a lot more resources to help her out. Anyway, I just wanted to call you to let you know. I'll see you after work. I love you."
"I love you too." I hang up the call before going back to work.
When eleven o'clock rolls around, Clark comes back to my office to announce that ByteTech's project manager, Terrence, is here for the meeting to possibly have a collaboration project between our two companies. I tell Clark to let Terrence come into the office. Clark normally takes notes during the meeting, so he comes in as well.
I stand up from my chair as the two walk in. I hold out my hand for Terrence to shake and he does as he says, "It's nice to meet you, Mr. Lannister."
"Please, call me Marius," I say as I gesture for him to sit on the chair across from my desk.
"Will do, Marius," Terrence says, sitting down. "So let's begin."
The two of us begin to discuss what both of us have in mind for the company collaboration that would benefit both companies in the end. It takes some time but soon enough, we have something that works.
"This looks great," Terrence says once we've come to an agreement, looking at his own notes. "I'll work with my company's lawyer to get a contract written up. I'll let you know when it's done."
"Sounds good," I say.
"I look forward to working with you," Terrence says, giving me a smile before shaking my hand one final time.
Clark leads Terrence out of the office and once the door is closed, I notice a look of uncertainty on Clark's face. "Is everything okay, Clark?" I ask.
Clark hesitates before he nods. "Yeah. Everything's okay. It's just..." He seems to contemplate whether or not he should tell me what's on his mind but in the end, he decides against it. "Nothing. It's nothing."
"Does it have to do with the collaboration?" I ask. "Because if you think part of it doesn't work for our company, I'd be opened to hear it."
"No, it doesn't have to do with the collaboration," Clark says. "It's fine. Really." Before I can say anything else, he leaves the office. It probably has to do with something in his personal life and if that's the case, I don't want to push him to tell me what's on his mind. It's not my business.
The rest of the work day goes smoothly and once everything is wrapped up for the day, I leave the office and head back home.
The moment I step foot into my home, I get a strong whiff of seafood, which is one of my, Fawn's, and our daughters' favourite cuisine. I take off my shoes and set hang my briefcase onto the hook by the door before walking into the kitchen. Fawn is currently cooking dinner with the twins helping. They're focusing on making a salad right now to go with dinner since it's one of the safer things for the twins to cook.
I walk up behind Fawn, wrapping my arms around his waist as I kiss his cheek. "I see you're making crab for dinner. My favourite."
"I know," Fawn says. "I've also got some salmon in the oven. I was working at the port today and the fishermen had a great day, so I picked some up for dinner."
"It smells amazing," I say. I rest my chin on his shoulder. "You know what we should have for dessert?"
"If you're going to say what I think you're going to say, you should probably think twice," Fawn says. "Harlow is still in her repeating what she hears phase and I would rather not have our two year old repeat it."
"Fair enough," I say. "But you do know what I'm talking about, so how about it?"
"Once the twins are in bed."
"Good enough for me."
