Sisi Yaa was seated on a carved wooden bench with her chin on the back of her palms. She looked grieved.
She was thinking deeply and mumbling to herself.
If anyone had told her her granddaughter was sleeping around with a man, she could have never believed.Adoley was all around known to be respectful, hardworking, decent and other girls admired her for taking care of her own beauty.
Sisi knew this wasn't her first time of seeing girls in their village get pregnant. But why did it have to be her Adoley?
Eventually, She consoled herself from worrying and stood up.
She walked up to her oven, bent and collected some dried cassava peels from the drying mat and moved towards the goat pen."Sisi!" She turned to find Adoley right behind BB. She had buried her face. She was so afraid and was perspiring due to the walk from the bridge. She had a frown of worry on her face. She bit her fingers.
Sisi dropped the pan of cassava peels and faced them.
"Oh! oh oh! BB! I even stopped my search. Are you not supposed to be at the clinic? Spilt milk! That is what this is. Don't even burden yourself" Sisi uttered sadly.BB was amazed. Wasn't it this same woman who had been roaming for her grandchild? She wondered.
"Sisi, I couldn't just have you run around the village in search of this big woman,"BB said, "and besides I met kunte, my northern colleague and so I've asked him to sign me in. We even have no medicines even until Saturday when the chemists buses come around" she added.
"Thank you BB, you have always been like a daughter to me. The kind I never had! " she spat.
"Oh Sisi!"BB chuckled.
"I'll make you some yam porridge before you are back from work someone's royal" Sisi assured her.
"Please Sisi, I wanted to ask you to pardon Adoley.. these pills...." BB began to plead. She wasn't even sure if it was reasonable.
"My dear, aren't there better things worth pleading for? I just wonder if these youth around see the beauty in your attire. This green and richness. Be proud my dear! Wear it with pride! You don't have to plead at all. I can't change anything about this one you want to beg for. The harm has been done behind my back and so must the sores cleaned behind my back. Don't you even worry. She knows everything by now. I don't have much to do BB" Sisi announced unbothered. She walked to the tent for more cassava peels.
BB stood for a while and checked her wristwatch. She didn't know what to do. She patted Adoley and then said a few words to her. BB started her walk the clinic.
Adoley stood there. Unsure of what to do or say.
The silence that grew for a few minutes was louder. She just needed Sisi to say something at least."Sisi," Adoley muttered; though a little louder than whisper.
"Sisi" -
"Sisi Yaa"-
Silence.
"Ado, I have nothing to say again. This my big mouth won't say pim! There's enough corn for the evening, help yourself to it - someone's mother- to feedthat child of yours -growing" she stressed the last word.
"I'm not pregnant Sisi" Adoley cried.
"Are you not? Oh I'm sorry your highness! Almighty God-Adoley, Our goddess of this land, you're not pregnant ao!" Sisi had her sarcasm rise, "will you get out of my face!" She turned towards her goats.
Drops of sweat run down Adoley's legs. The trouble had just begun.
