She's not my woman, at least not yet.
Those words kept plaguing Chike as he reminded himself Ada wasn't his. He was hurt but she didn't really owe him anything so he couldn't expect her to be mindful of his feelings. However, they were friends and friends didn't treat themselves the way Ada did him. Especially when their friendship has always been based on honesty and being real.
He forced himself to lock away all the painful emotions and just stick to the questions that were now burning him. He needed to know where they stood in their relationship. Did she not value him anymore? Was she trying to cut him off now that she was supposedly in love?
"We're here," Kachi announces, distracting Chike from his thoughts.
"Thanks man. I really appreciate you dropping me off on such short notice." He'd arranged for an Uber to pick him, but his ride had been cancelled. Kachi volunteering to drive him was what saved him from possibly missing his flight. It was imperative that he got on that flight. He had limited time to talk to Ada, so booking their flight together had helped.
"You don't have to thank me for that. Remember to have fun, but not too much fun," Kachi teased, giving him a wink.
"What does that mean?" He eyed the man.
"You can interpret it as you like, now get out of my car. I have important things to do today."
Chike slapped his friend on the shoulder before alighting. He took his small travel bag from the backseat then patted the car for his friend to go. The plan was for them to get into Anambra Saturday, have dinner with her family, spend Sunday chilling and then they'd come back together on Monday.
He'd been surprised when Ada answered his call that Thursday evening and had been tempted to question her about everything but had held off. In the three minutes they spoke, she agreed to let him book the flight and meet up at the airport this morning. He called her, wanting to check if she'd arrived. Ada picked up on the first ring.
"Hey. I'm just paying my Uber. I'll be there in a few minutes."
"Ok I'm waiting for you." He gave her directions on where to find him and then ended the call. Five minutes later, Ada was heading towards him.
She wore a high-waisted pants and a crop tank top that showed off some of the waist beads and chains she wore. They were silver and caught the light as she walked towards him. Ada didn't walk too fast or slow, she walked like a woman with a purpose. Her hips swayed softly and he found himself distracted.
"Hi," she said, beaming at him. Huge sunglasses covered her face and all Chike wanted was to pull her to him and take those gloss covered lips with his.
"Hi. We're almost late, let's go in." He gave her a brief hug, then relieved her of her bags. Trust Ada to overpack for a three day journey.

When they announced that seatbelts could be unfastened and people could move about, Chike turned to Ada. Her eyes were shut but he knew she was awake from the bobs of her head as she listened to music on her Airpods. He tapped her, watching her beautiful brown eyes blink slowly before settling on him. She gave him a small smile. The whole thirty minutes plus they'd spent before boarding had been silent and awkward.
"Can we talk?" he asked, watching her remove the peas of her Airpods and placing them in the pod.
"Sure. What's up?"
What's up? Her question annoyed him but he held back. Ada didn't respond well to anger, he'd learned from experience. She got defensive and argumentative. If he wanted to gain anything from this conversation, he had to be calm.
