Even with the air conditioning turned on to the max, Ada still felt toasty as her eyes opened. Chike's arm was secured beneath her breast and then warmth of his breath caressed her nape. She should feel content, but that was the last thing on Ada's mind.

Although she tried to stop, her mind kept on comparing the events of the past hours with her relationship with John. She couldn't help but notice the difference. Chike fucked her hard but at the same time she felt treasured. She knew he cared and would do nothing to harm her or make her question herself.

Something had to be wrong with her because instead of her to cherish that feeling and relax in the warmth of his body, Ada felt unworthy. She felt too broken to be deserving of something good. She was stained and would only sour the beauty that was Chike.

Instantly, the air around her chilled and goosebumps gathered on her flesh. She could imagine Chike's smile when he woke up. She could almost hear the conversation that would follow; he'd want more because that was just the kind of man Chike was. She'd turn him down and that would destroy what little was left of their friendship. She had to leave.

Slowly, she extricated herself from his grip, careful not to wake him. Chike mumbled under his breath then drew her pillow to him. For a few seconds, Ada allowed herself to look at him and wish but that was all she could do.

Her bags were still by the door because she'd never truly unpacked. She got out jeans and a shirt, hurriedly tugging them on. She grabbed her bags and phone and tiptoed down the stairs. A notebook on the dining table caught her attention as she moved so she backtracked. It was filled with scribbles of Chike's handwriting; probably ideas for a book he was working on. It took a few seconds to find an empty page which she ripped out. It took even lesser time to pen down her note to him. She placed it on the book, then secured it with the pen.

After one final look, she was gone.

He'd never slept this good before and especially during the day. Chike couldn't restrain his smile as he thought about the reason for the peaceful rest. He shifted in the bed, trying to pull her closer but was met with the cold sheets. His eyes flew open and he immediately sat up. Where was she?

Chike kicked off the sheets that had somehow become entangled with his legs and got out of bed. "Ada?" he called out, walking towards the bathroom.

The place was empty so he turned for the door. Maybe she was in her room or she was fixing dinner. It was past six in the evening already. She was also missing from her room and the entire house felt too quiet. At the back of his mind, a dread had begun to grow and spread its wings but he shook the thought away.

"Ada?" he called out again. He hurried down the stairs to the kitchen and found it empty, just like he'd half expected. His chest began to constrict as he ran around the entire house, calling and shouting for her. He was alone.

Had she gone back to her place? He wondered. Maybe she needed to pick something. It was then he remembered that her bags were no longer sitting by the door. He wouldn't panic, he assured himself. She'd probably unpacked, finally. Chike raced back up to her room and flung the wardrobe doors open, empty. Even the bathroom was missing her hygiene things.

He raced down the stairs again and out his house, not caring that he was just in a pair of low riding shorts. He held said shorts up with one hand as he ran towards her house. The place was locked up but he didn't know if she locked it behind her or she'd not even come here.

Chike banged on the door, at the same time he called her name, loudly. It wasn't until a neighbor came over and told him to stop disturbing the neighborhood that he gave it a rest. The walk back to his house was the longest as his legs felt like lead. He didn't want to go back to a house where Ada wasn't with him.

After what felt like hours, he was back home. He found Ada's keys hanging on the wall beside his. If she didn't get her keys, then she'd probably gone to a hotel or something. He should call her, he thought and wondered why that hadn't been the first thing he did instead of running down the streets half naked and barefoot like a mad person.

He found the phone on his dining table and dialed her number. While it rang, he trailed his eyes around the room and it was then he saw it; a piece of paper with her handwriting on it. Chike dropped his phone so he could pick up the paper and his heart broke at the words he read.

I'm sorry but I have to go.

That was all she'd written without even bothering to sign her name or explain to him why she had to leave. When he dialed her number again, he wasn't surprised to find out it was switched off. If he didn't love her so much, he would probably hate her right now.

The sound of the doorbell ringing woke him up from his fitful nap. He'd slumped to the ground after reading her note and had managed to cry himself to sleep. This was the lowest low he'd ever hit. Even when he lost his father, he'd not cried this much. The bell rang again and he dragged himself up. A part of him wished that it was Ada at the door but the sensible part of him shut down that idea. Still, he couldn't stop himself from hurrying to the door and pulling it open.

"Ada!"

"I'm quite handsome I know, but Ada still looks a lot better than I do," Kachi drawled.

He couldn't stop the wave of disappointment that threatened to drown him and the stupid tears came back again. This was becoming embarrassing. Chike turned away before his friend could see him crying.

"What the hell, man?" Kachi hurried after him. He gripped his arm and turned him around, holding him in place. Chike struggled but Kachi had much more muscle on him. "Shit. Are you crying? What happened?"

"She's gone," he said. At that moment, Chike didn't care what Kachi thought about seeing him like this. Trying to hold everything in was too hard.

"What do you mean gone?"

"She just packed up and left. She wrote a dumb note for me and I've not been able to reach her since."

"What did you do?" Kachi led him to a seat at the bar then pulled out a bottle of whiskey. He filled the glass tumbler and handed it to Chike.

"We had sex," he said simply, then downed the entire glass of alcohol. He collected the bottle and began to chug it. Being drunk was way better than crying in front of Kachi.

"Slow down!" Kachi grabbed the bottle from him and when Chike gave him a glare, he released the bottle. "What do you mean you had sex?"

"It just happened. We had sex, it was beautiful and then I woke up and she was gone."

"Did you tell her how you feel?"

"She left before I could even say anything. Before then she said she wanted fun and a distraction so I guess I was just that to her. When she was done, she left."

"Fuck."
