Darby
With the low season beginning in just a few weeks, it can only mean one thing.
Our wedding day is finally here.
After some months (not as many as other people take) of planning, preparing the barn, making sure it serves as the most unforgettable wedding venue, today we will be the first couple to marry in it.
Outside the ceremony will take place by the river, that area also prepped along with the barn and decorated in the scheme that Steve and I chose. Surprisingly he was more than willing to sit down and have his input.
My dress is suited to the rustic theme that obviously is the big part of our wedding. Made of lace with bell shaped flowing sleeves, it's quite bohemian in some respects, but proves useful for moving about and whatnot. Of course there are boots concealed under it - what kind of a ranch wedding would it be without them?
I haven't opted for a veil, instead having my hair just down in beachy waves. And the bouquet (which honestly is stunning) was made by the local florist, Agatha - who I swear has used some kind of witchcraft to make it look as amazing as I never before anticipated.
Now as I look at myself in the mirror, I can't help but feel those same butterflies that I had on first seeing Steve again when I returned here.
There's a knock at the door and my dad now walks in, smiling as he sees me. "You know, I have to admit - you look much happier than when we did this the first time around". He admits.
I nod. "Probably because this time I know it will last".
My dad met Steve again in the new year, and immediately gave his blessing for this to happen. They get along well - which is something that never happened between my parents and my ex.
"He's always been waiting for you, now you two can finally put an end to the years of silent pining after one another".
"Is it wrong for me to feel a little nervous?" I ask.
Dad shakes his head at this. "Everyone does. You know he'll be waiting right there for you, just like he always has been. He wouldn't be doing this if he wasn't serious about you".
I know that for a fact.
"Do you think he'll like this?" I ask, now questioning my choice of a wedding dress and other things, even though I know they're right and perfect.
Dad puts his hands onto my shoulders and gives me a gentle shake. "He will love it, hell you could be dressed in a trash bag and that man would still marry you".
I laugh at the thought and shake the feeling off. "I guess this is the better choice. Have you seen him this morning?"
"I have, he's worrying that you'll bolt".
I now look at him. "Could you get him for me please?"
"You shouldn't see him before the wedding..."
"I won't. I'll have the door between us, but...I guess I just wanna talk to him". I say, feeling the overwhelming urge to just hear him say my name so as my anxiety can be quashed fully.
Dad finally agrees and goes to find Steve, returning ten minutes later with him. I stand behind the door while he does so outside, just to make sure that we can't see one another.
"Darbs?"
Everything is going to be fine now he's here.
"Sorry, I just wanted to hear you..."I tell him.
He shifts. "Well I'm here - you alright?"
"In all honesty I'm shitting it". I tell him. "I don't know why, because I know you'll be there...dad said you were worried I would bolt?"
There's a nervous laugh. "Always the worst case scenario going through my head. You know that".
I quickly debunk this. "I'd never leave you at the alter. Ever. I love you too much to even think about doing that".
"I love you too Darbs, always have".
"Always will" I finish off the sentence with a smile.
He sighs. "I can't wait to see you..."
"Not long now". I promise. "We waited for one another this long, another half hour shouldn't kill us too much".
"You know if I had to then I'd wait forever - I should get down there and say hi to everyone".
I smile to myself more. "Ok...hey, Steve?"
"Yeah?"
"I can't wait to finally marry you". I know I sound all fluffy and slushy, but I really can't wait.
"Me neither, see you at the alter". And I know he's smiling too as I hear him now leave.

We're married...
Just a few hours later and we're finally over the nail biting part of vows, pictures all finished and now we're enjoying our reception with our guests as the night begins to draw in. The fairy lights outside of the barn light up the patio area and make it look mesmerising, the outdoor fire pit is keeping the chill off the guests who are standing outside all talking, drinking, and having a good time. In the background there is the usual sounds of the wildlife that are now coming out to play if you listen closely, and inside the barn the party has already started.
"Mrs Rogers". Steve now slides up beside me and kisses behind my ear. "I haven't had a chance to enjoy you for five minutes today".
"You get to enjoy me for the rest of your life, husband". I muse.
"Damn right I do, and I'm gonna make every day of it count". He says, taking my hand and placing a kiss upon the top of it. "C'mon...let's get outta here for a while".
I frown. "They'll know we're gone..."
He makes a 'pfft' noise. "I don't care, I wanna spend some time with my wife watching the sun go down", and now hoists me up, carrying me away.
Thankfully he puts me down some short time later and I realise it's the way to the point. Hitching my dress up as we walk with one another enjoying the moment we can finally spend together.
The first sundown as man and wife.
And it's the most beautiful one that I have experienced.
As he now kisses me, I know that we'll have many more to come - and I can't wait to share every single one with him.
