By November of 1990, Belladonna Potter had become Belladonna Blackwell, having been a part of a new family unit for approximately three months when she was 4, before her adoptive parents tragically burned to death in a house fire.
John and Verity Blackwell had seen fit to strike their new daughter with a cane before locking her in the garden shed on a icy February night after coming across her doing satanic things like floating her book above her head as she read in her bed. Coincidentally, they accidentally left the hob on that very night and their house burned to the ground with them inside, the sole survivor being the small girl locked in the garden shed who didn't feel the winter's chill as her relatives had so considerately lit a fire to keep her warm.
Despite this history, Belladonna appeared to adults as a cheerful, intelligent, if not slightly odd young girl. She was the darling of the orphanage staff always happy to help and always so polite. It really was shameful that the other orphans were always blaming her for the accidents they got themselves into.
Like Emily Langston: she was convinced that it was dear Belladonna's fault when she fell down the stairs and broke both of her legs but really , the girl had been helping Sarah in the kitchen at the time and what reason would she have to push Emily down the stairs in the first place. Emily then went on to detail how she had set fire to Belladonna's clothes and got herself into even more trouble.
Or the truly awful story of Jamie Williams: the boy had died accidentally, in a car crash but the rest of the orphans had insisted that Belladonna had something to do with it because he had cut the head off a little snake that the girl had apparently made friends with. But really what child makes friends with a snake of all things.
The orphans were just jealous that Belladonna had such a good head on her shoulders.
She wasn't even 11 yet and she was homeschooling herself to take some of her GCSEs at the end of the school year, what would have been Year 6 for her. After Belladonna had been moved up three years in primary school the matron had decided that it would be better for her to learn at home so she could go at her own place. And the girl never seemed to want to make friends anyway and definitely seemed to appreciate her newfound freedom.
Alongside preparing for her GCSEs in all the core subjects, the little genius was also a proficient sewer and knitter and an accomplished chef and baker, as she often demonstrated in her chores for the orphanage.
As well as this, she was verging on fluent in French, Spanish and surprisingly Latin and Greek, seemingly having a natural aptitude for languages.
All in all, she was an exceptionally talented, exceedingly sensible and extraordinarily charming girl. The angel of St. Anne's, no matter how much the other children insisted she was the devil.
