As the sun set on the 31st of October 1981, a tall man in a long dark cloak strolled through the streets of Godric's Hollow. He appeared unhurried, although a glance under the cover of his black hood would show a slightly worrying amount of excitement for what was to come. Considering what was to come was a quadruple-homicide attempt.Approaching one house in particular, the tall man deftly opened the latch and the gate swung open silently. After a few moments of quiet, the front door exploded with an echoing bang and the man's grin widened exponentially. There was movement inside the house, frantic shouts and rushed footsteps but the tall man merely resumed his stroll, stepping into the front hall of the little cottage. A burst of green light struck a middle-aged, portly man and he collapsed to the floor. The tall man walked over the fresh corpse like it was an overly embellished rug and headed up the stairs, his expression now alight with an almost manic glee. In what he assumed to be a nursery, the man encountered a frail-looking, weeping woman, who swiftly suffered a similar fate to her husband.'And then there were two' mused the Dark Lord Voldemort as he moved to consider his final adversaries. His red eyes narrowed as he took in the first twin. 'How could this thing possibly hope to defeat me? He and his magic are utterly average'The aforementioned thing was blubbering and screaming and generally being a nuisance and so Voldemort turned his gaze to the other child. He was struck by a pair of bright green eyes, staring at him curiously.'This one seems more likely' the Dark Lord decided, 'A shame to waste such potential though, very strong magic, she'll be a worthy enemy. It seems impossible that these two are even related, let alone bloody identical twins'Then, finished with his pondering on familial ties, the Dark Lord lifted his wand towards the girl, who seemed to lean forward a little in interest, and intoned two words, manic smile never wavering: "Avada Kedavra"But, although a sharp green light left the man's wand for the third time that evening, there was not a third corpse. As the curse hit the sternum of the green-eyed, one-and-a-half year old, there was a resounding crash and suddenly the green light changed course, slamming into its sender. The Dark Lord Voldemort's grin fell off his face in surprise before his body seemed to evaporate, leaving behind a bone-like, yew wand, a pile of expensive, black, acromantula-silk robes and some polished, dragon-leather oxfords. The small girl giggled to herself, even as a part of the roof collapsed from the magical outburst, and closed her eyes to get some sleep. Her brother never ceased in his screaming, in fact increasing it further as a large piece of wood from the ceiling pierced the skin of his forehead, leaving a bleeding mark in an ugly jagged line. In this instance, the screaming could likely be forgiven.*****Roughly ten minutes later there were several loud cracks by the door's now-collapsed front porch and James Potter, Lily Potter and Albus Dumbledore appeared from thin air. The trio looked around quickly and Lily gasped "Dad" as her eyes fell on the figure on the floor in the hallway. Then she began running, the others not far behind her, up the stairs to discover the fate of her babies.Thankfully they were both alive. The boy, Charlus James Potter, was still screaming and bleeding and the girl, Belladonna Carina Potter, was fast asleep with a small smile on her face. The three adult wizards scanned the room, Lily's face falling further at the sight of her mother's dead body before they all spotted the pile of clothes."Headmaster?" James questioned quietly, as Lily raced towards Charlus to begin healing his wound, "what does this mean?""Well, my dear boy," Dumbledore replied, trying to keep his face somber even as a victorious grin tried to break free, "I believe it means that Charlus here has defeated Tom"James and Lily swung around to face him, shocked and he nodded seriously, "Yes my dears, it must be true. Charlus must have used his magic to both reflect Tom's killing curse back onto him and to protect his sister, unfortunately leaving him with that rather nasty scar. There's no other explanation"James was the first to blink out of his shock, "Wicked, I knew my son was awesome! What d'you think of that Lils, our son's the defeater of Voldemort!!"Dumbledore chimed in with, "Yes, I suppose you could call him the Boy-who-lived""Great name, I like it, Headmaster!"Lily was looking between the two, seemingly still in shock from the events of the evening, or perhaps grieving, not for Voldemort of course, but for her parents. Eventually she found her words, asking hesitantly, "So what do we do now then?"At this, Dumbledore allowed himself to smile, "I have a few thoughts, my dear girl. Firstly, you shall have to do an interview for the Prophet tomorrow with little Charlus, he will likely become quite famous now that he's saved the world, so to speak, so please do be prepared for that. Speaking of his new found fame, I wonder if perhaps it would be wise to send Belladonna away. I worry that if she were to grow up here, she would be jealous, constantly living in her brother's shadow, as it were.""We can't send our daughter away, Dumbledore don't be ridiculous" Lily exclaimed hotly, but the old man merely gave her a serene smile in response."It was merely a suggestion, my dear. I know you have a sister that could raise dear Belladonna quite happily in the muggle world, hidden away from all of this Boy-who-lived nonsense until it's time to come to Hogwarts. It may be better for her, so I just wanted to mention the idea. Think nothing of it if you are in disagreement"James and Lily looked at each other and then nodded, "Thank you, Headmaster, we'll think about it once we've dealt with this""That's all I ask, my dears, that's all I ask"*****The next day, the Potter family finally made it back to their house after several strenuous hours of public appearances. They, that is James, Lily and Charlus, had gone to the Daily Prophet office as soon as it had opened and given a detailed interview which had been printed almost immediately. The trio had then gone for lunch in Diagon Alley, enjoying the ability to be seen in public once more before heading to the ministry to talk with the minister and several other important figures. Finally arriving home at around 5 pm, James and Lily realised that they hadn't thought of their other child, their only daughter, once as they completed their day's tasks. The girl was in the nursery, playing quietly by herself, floating some stuffed toys around the room, a wolf and a black dog."Maybe we should consider Dumbledore's idea, Lils. If this is just the first day, imagine what it will be like for the next ten years""You're right, James, we should send Bella away. She'll be so jealous of Charlie all the time and he shouldn't have to deal with that"The pair were silent for a moment before James moved towards the fireplace and flooed over to the Headmaster's office at Hogwarts. Lily picked up her eldest child, the girl appearing resigned to her fate, and followed after her husband.*****After hearing their explanations, Albus Dumbledore smiled, an almost unnoticeable glint of satisfaction in his pale blue eyes."That is perfectly reasonable, my dears, after all dear Charlus' fame is likely to only grow in the coming days. Belladonna here would only become bitter towards him if she remained near""Exactly, Headmaster," Lily smiled, "We won't make Charlie deal with her jealousy, the poor boy has been through enough""Would you permit me to place some spells upon the young girl? Just to prevent anyone from tracking her down in order to attack Charlus through their connection?""Oh not at all, Headmaster," James quickly nodded, Lily making a noise of agreement beside him,"That's a brilliant idea, please go ahead""Excellent, this should only take a few minutes" Dumbledore said beginning to wave his wand. After several minutes in which the office was silent except for the Headmaster's quiet muttering,Dumbledore sat back and smiled again, "You should place her with Petunia tonight."*****As the sun rose on the 2nd of November 1981, a tall, thin woman opened the door to 4 Privet Drive in Little Whinging, Surrey to collect the morning's milk. She let out a sharp scream as she discovered rather more than she bargained for, in the form of a small baby wrapped in a thin blanket laying on her doorstep. Eyeing the child suspiciously she noticed a letter tucked into the blanket's folds which she picked up and read quickly, her face furrowing into a rather fierce scowl, before moving into an expression of contemplation.'Interesting,' she thought, 'Perfect Lily and her freakish husband, abandoning their child because it's not freakish enough to kill some bigger, scary freak.'The woman's mouth twitched as she reread the letter, focussing on a certain section. 'Financial reimbursement, hmm?' she mused, an idea beginning to form in her mind and a malicious glint shining in her eyes.*****Two hours later, a stout, red-faced woman opened the door to St. Anne's Orphanage in Limehouse,East London after hearing a series of sharp knocks. She came face to face with a sharp-faced woman carrying a small child, who immediately began speaking,"Hello, are you in charge here? This child was left on my doorstep this morning and I have no idea where it came from but I can't take it in, I have my own son and we can't afford another and we simply just can't take in this child! I have no idea why it was left on our doorstep of all places when surely an abandoned child should be taken to an orphanage but I thought I could just bring it here myself so here I am and please tell me you can take it?"The woman finally finished speaking and the orphanage matron sighed and led her into her office,"Yes we can take the child, are you sure you know nothing about it?""The only thing with it was this necklace that says 'Belladonna' so I assume that's it's name though why any would name a child such a ridiculous thing I can only guess but there you go"Their conversation continued in this ilk, with the matron grudgingly completing the process to take the child into the orphanage and the other woman insisting that she knew absolutely nothing, not a single thing, about the child before finally it was over.By 10am on the 2nd of November 1981, Belladonna Carina Potter was lying in a lumpy crib in a disheveled orphanage surrounded by the other abandoned babies and Petunia Dursley was driving back to Surrey, a victorious smirk on her face as she thought of the money soon to be coming her way. She has always been a rather good actress, if she did say so herself.*****10am on the 2nd of November 1981 also saw the arrival of two men at Potter manor, where the Potters had seen fit to move after the events of the last days. Sirius Black and Remus Lupin greeted their best friends with joy, an infectious feeling of elation rising as they allowed themselves to breath properly for the first time in years.Exchanging ecstatic greetings with the Potter couple and their newly famous son eventually led to Sirius grinning and saying, "So where's my favourite goddaughter, then? It's been far, far too long since I saw the little angel"James and Lily exchanged a look. Sirius and Remus exchanged a look after seeing this exchange of looks. Charlie did not exchange any looks with anyone. Not entirely surprising."What does that look mean?" Remus eventually questioned nervously, "Whats happened to Bella?"Eventually, James and Lily explained what they had done and their reasoning, confident that the other pair would understand and accept their course of action. It's safe to say that the other pair did not understand and accept their course of action. In fact, Sirius punched James in the face, Remus broke several vases as his magic spiralled out of control and then the two of them burnt their friendship with James and Lily to the ground and salted the ashes in a flurry of threats and curses before storming out with promises to get Belladonna back if it was the last thing they did.Unfortunately, though both formidable wizards in their own rights, even over a year of continuous, dedicated searching for her wouldn't allow them to get past the spells Dumbledore placed on her. Sirius and Remus eventually gave up the search for Belladonna, devastated and with a solemn vow to get in touch with her as soon as humanly possible.Their burning fury towards James, Lily and the meddling Headmaster never dimmed and the pair instead formed unlikely friendships with evil dark wixen such as Sabrina Zabini and Magnus Bulstrode. How scandalous.
