**WARNING**
**SPOILERS FOR THE CHAPTER, 'SURPRISE' IN MY FIC, 'SUBJECT 3281; CHELL'S STORY'.**
(If you care about that sort of stuff lol)Think, she asked herself, what could I do to ease his transition into death? What could I do to— and then it hit her. The idea wasn't exactly ideal—she hadn't done it in quite a while—but it might just help him, she thought, it might help him deal with his less-than-ideal fate. Give him-give them both-something to remember each other by as Forrest's consciousness dimmed.
"I could sing to you," Chell said, with little to no emotion marking her voice, though tears were still streaming down her cheeks. "If... if you'd like that, I mean." She seemed to remember from her days before the facility, that most people enjoyed being sung to sleep, and she couldn't see why her partner—starved of all comfort as he had been—wouldn't take a degree of pleasure in this as well.
A look of intense shock overcame the features of the boy in her lap, and Chell feared for a moment that she had literally scared him to death with her ludicrous idea. She completely understood.
"I know it's odd," she amended, "I just thought that it might... ease the pain. Help with your passing. If you don't want me to, then—"
"No!" her partner interjected with a cough, and a few wheezed breaths. "No, I... I wantyouto, I wantyouto. You're right," he continued in a low voice, and in between breaths so shallow that Chell feared that his time was fast approaching. "you're... right, nd... nd clever, nd... wn'drful, nd... nd brave, nd—" Chell put a finger to his lips, her tears coming faster and stronger than they had before. This was dangerously close to delirium. He wouldn't make it through the hour without medical treatment, she knew it.
Make this count, she told herself. If this is one of the last things he experiences, make it the best it possibly can be.
With that thought still lingering in her mind, Chell opened her mouth, and began to sing the first song that popped into her head. A song that she was sure had been sung to her many a time, all too many years ago.
"Moon River, wider than a mile,
I'm crossing you in style someday,"Breathe. Just keep breathing, my friend.
"Oh dream maker, you heart breaker,
Wherever you're goin', I'm goin' your way,"The boy's eyelids fluttered shut, and his breathing slowed to a point where it became nearly undetectable, and still she sang on, determined at least to finish the song.
"Tune drifter, off to see the world,
There's such a lot of world to see,"Forrest's breathing had become significantly more laborious by this point, though his grip on her hand was as steady as it had been in the beginning; a grip of iron in the face of death.
"We're after the same rainbows and,
Waitin' round the bend,"Breathe, Chell; stop crying, you can't cry now, you've got to finish the song, don't cry—
"My... Huckleberry friend,
Moon River, and—"Finish it, he's not dead yet, finish the song. For him. For Forrest. Chell took a deep breath.
"Moon River, and... me."
The boy opened his eyes—to Chell's slight surprise—and made a sort of half-grimace-half-smile.
