Kerusha's 18th Birthday/The Final Exam

Shikamaru's POV

I stood on a step ladder a few feet away from Anko, finishing up hanging the final decorations for Kerusha's party. I hope she didn't forget with the final exam today, but knowing her, she probably did. She's been spending all this time training she hasn't been at home much. Either with her sensei, dad, or myself. On the occasion, however, she ends up with that sand ninja.

I climb down from the step ladder, having finished hanging the decorations. It's about time for guests to start showing up. I wonder where mom is with Ru's cake? She can't be late this year. Mom's always late for anything to do with her. She is so strict yet so aloof for her own daughter. The first bit of guests started pouring in.

Cat boy, as Ru calls him, and the other two sand ninja accompanying him show up first. Setting a present for Ru down then retreating to a corner by themselves. Weirdos. Whatever. Next was Sakura, Ino, and Choji, all three bearing gifts for Ru. She's not gonna have any time to really take these home. Please, mom, hurry.

Old man from Ichiraku dropped by with a new kind of ramen for Ru to try, put it in a hot pot on a table near where the cake should be. She can eat the ramen while waiting for her cake. Hopefully, the cake is here before her. I am starting to get nervous. "Anko, please tell me my mom is running down the alleyway." I say nervously, hoping she'd get here before Dad and Asuma sensei got here with Ru.

Anko shook her head and continued to watch for my mom while i greeted guests and kept an eye out for my father approaching with Ru. Naruto came running in with a pack of instant ramen with a bow on it. I laughed internally at the simplicity of the gift. I know she'll still love it. I hear Ru laughing as i hear dads and Asuma sensei's voices approaching.

"Everyone hide!" I whisper yell into the restaurant, silently cursing mom as i hide behind the vase, catching a glimpse of something new on the table near the hotpot. Is that? It is. Mom made it just in time. The cake is here, and mom is hiding with Anko. I smirk at Choji as we hear my dad covering up Ru's eyes and tell her he has to lead her in as a training exercise. I smell Asuma Sensei's cigarette smoke as they enter.

I flip the switch on, and we all jump out, yelling. "Surprise! Happy birthday, Kerusha!" I yelled, " Happy Birthday, Ru!" Instead of saying her name like everyone else, i chose her nickname much like she does to me at every party. I look at her to see her very confused. Heh, i knew it. She did forget. Becoming a Jonin must be very important to her.

"Wow. You guys, i didn't even realize it was today. I've been so focused trying to be prepared for any fight today that i forgot my birthday is today." She said, absolutely bewildered. I smiled triumphantly. Called it. I walked towards my sister and gave her a side hug. "Happy Birthday, big sis." I said, smiling. She pulled me into a full hug, laughing with full force. "You're responsible for all this, huh? I know it wasn't just Anko." She said, smiling brightly.

Ru let go andd went to go and say hi to her little crush. While she did so, Kurenai and her squad walked in, bearing their gifts for Ru. i directed them and went to talk with Ino and Choji, smiling at my mom as i walked over.

Kerusha's POV

"Hi Kuro." I say, walking up to the boy with cat ears. I see a small tint of a reddish blush flow across his cheeks when he hears the nickname. "Oh- uh hi, Kerusha." He says, stuttering a bit, i see I've struck a certain nerve, hehe. I smiled at his flustering and chuckled slightly. "Not used to nicknames, i see." He looks at me with the light blush, still dusting his cheeks, then quickly looks at the floor embarrassed. "Hey. It's ok. I come up with nicknames like that for everyone. Just ask Sasuke. He hates his." I say laughing at the memory of when i came up with Sasukes nickname. "Wait. Really?" Kuro says, i think, feeling less embarrassed to know i nickname everyone.
