I can't believe this. All my life I have trained for this day, for this exact moment. And within 2 seconds my whole world crumbled. I trained all my life, dedicated everything I had, sacrificed my relationships to become the best guardian this world has ever seen. My one reason to be doing this was her. Lissa. My best friend and now apparently future queen of the Moroi world.

I had known her since we were little. She was there throughout my life, for the good and the bad. Her family always knew that I'd be her guardian at some point. Even after they died everyone told me this was my destiny. I was supposed to be there at her side. I have been there at her side. And now I might be replaced? No. this couldn't be happening.

After graduating from the academy, Lissa went off to some university. I went with her seeing as she's my charge. I really didn't look forward to studying more than I already had at the academy, but you have to do what you gotta do. Every class she chose, I chose too. There was no other way to protect the last Dragomir. Thankfully I wasn't her only guardian, but I was always near guard, meaning I had to stay by her side. As a girl that was pretty easy to do and not too obvious, everywhere you looked you had those two best friends that only hung out with each other. It was actually a great job for me. Hanging out with my best friend all the time and doing what I love – protecting her – all at once. I just never thought it would come down to this.

Shortly before graduation Queen Tatiana announced that she chose Lissa to be her heir of the throne. My bondmate didn't even have a choice in the matter. She was definitely not prepared to do it, so this is why the queen sent her to university to further her education in politics. If I hate one subject more than maths, it was politics. I never liked it and never would, but there I was in all classes that prepared Lissa for her new role. Once a month or so we travelled back to court for a few days where Lissa got 1:1 lessons with the queen and her advisors. Apparently, there is way more to being the queen than just sitting on the throne and ordering people around. I also got lessons with Hans Croft, the head of the guardians. He showed me new techniques on watching out for danger when you are guarding the head of a whole ass society. We did more practice attacks that I would have liked, and I also failed more than I would have liked. Turns out they actually go easy on you at the academy. Protecting regular moroi and even royal moroi doesn't even compare anywhere to protecting a fucking queen. Lissa always seemed extremely worried about what I was being put through. At school I was the best novice they had ever seen, but during that training I felt like a failure. Until I didn't. I knew there was no way in the world that I was gonna fuck this training up, so I put in extra time. I started running every morning, something that I should have done at the academy already, but seeing as I was way ahead of my classmates, I never saw the need for that. But right there and then I understood. I lacked speed and strength. Hitting the gym whenever I could, I finally started seeing progress in my strength. Hans even complimented me on my stamina and motivation. Once I started passing my fake strigoi attacks at the imaginary queen – played by Hans more often than not – I felt secure in what I was doing. Never once did I think about other candidates for this job. But I guess I should have. My record wasn't that clean. I had missed school a few times, had my moments where I just wouldn't take anybody's shit and lash out – teacher or royal moroi – I didn't care. Even I grew up. I stopped doing it as soon as I was a promised guardian, taking my

duty as serious as I could. That's why I didn't really understand what had just happened.

Today was the day where the royal guardians would be chosen. With the queen retiring soon, they wanted fresh blood in protecting Vasilisa. Especially for her near guard. The way it worked was that the royal guard consisted of a near guar – the person always staying with their charge, no matter what or where. With that I mean no.matter.what.or.where. Includes bathrooms. As best friends that wasn't something I cared about of course. The far guards consisted of three guards always being close by – so bathroom scenario again: I am in the bathroom with Lissa, while 1 guard is in the room next to it and two guards guard the door to that room. And then there were another three guards that actually were only relevant at big events, where three guards lead the queen, me next to her, and three guards behind us. With Lissa being the last Dragomir they wanted to make sure that near guard was a trusted person of her choosing. In fact, the permanent near guard position was invented specifically for her.
