That afternoon, as I was returning from my final class of the day and shaking snow off of my coat, I found a guy standing at my door. Tall and dark and ridiculously cute, he was holding tape and a few pieces of colourfully printed paper.
I squinted at him suspiciously, "Um, can I help you?"
"Uhh- Yes, yes you can actually," he replied, voice deep and gravelly. He had the most boyish grin on his face and looked like such a frat boy; I had no idea what he was doing in such a lousy dorm. "Me and my roommates are having a Christmas party."
He handed me a flyer that no doubt he or one of his roommates had designed on the computer in five minutes and printed out. "DORM ROOM 5A IS HAVING A CHRISTMAS PARTY AND YOUR INVITED!" it read.
"And?"
"I was putting up signs, see, every door that has a sign is invited," he explained, pointing down the hall at all 12 of the doors on our floor, all covered in signs. He'd invited everyone.
"If you were gonna invite everyone, wouldn't it just be easier to put up one sign?" I asked, sending him a pointed glance.
He looked thoughtful for a second before shrugging in the most typical manner. "Yeah well it wasn't my idea, it was Johnny's, so take it up with him."
I nodded, sucking in a breath. "Will do. So who are you then? Other than Johnny's henchman?" I questioned more out of curiosity than interest, it was only fair I know whom I'm having the most intelligent conversation of my life with.
"I'm Sean, Sean Monahan. You can call my Mony though," he said with a wink, proceeding to place a paper against my door.
I hummed. "You know Mony, not everyone appreciates having tape stuck on their door."
Ripping off a piece of tape he asked, "Are you one of those people?" Clearly missing the point of my comment.
"Yes I am." I snatched the roll from his hand to which he protested with a little whine. "You've already invited me, I don't think you need to hang your shitty advertisement on my door."
"Hey! Our invitation is beautiful, I designed it myself," he huffed defensively, holding the papers against his chest. Ah, so he had designed it. What a dweeb.
I outright laughed at his hurt facial expression.
"Since you hurt my feelings so badly, you have to come to our party now," Sean pouted, handing me the invitation instead.
"Okay, but only because your feelings are so fragile and precious Mony," I consoled, sticking my own lip out to match him.
There was a lull in which I realized that though I was enjoying the conversation, I had to go and sort out dinner and do homework. Unlocking my door, I said, "Well, I'll see you later then."
"Tomorrow night, actually," he corrected and I gasped, looking down at the crumpled page in my hand.
"Wait, this thing is tomorrow night?!" Fuck, that was so soon I needed time to mentally prepare myself, my ideal Friday night was not spending time getting drunk with college boys who have no sense of personal space. Plus, there was course work and exams to be studying for. Ugh.
"Yup!" He popped the P, looking at me amusedly. "See you th- wait what's your name?"
"Eleanor."
"See you tomorrow then, Eleanor," he waved, before turning and walking away.
When my I entered into 7B, my own dorm clutching the now crumpled up piece of paper, I was bombarded with questions from my roommate Madelyn, who was all bouncing blonde curls and ocean eyes and the cutest person probably in existence. She was such a stark contrast to my dark hair and glasses framed eyes. We fit well together though, she was chatty whereas I did most of the listening and she kept things neat and tidy in our dorm which was a plus since I couldn't be bothered.
"Who were you talking to?" she chirped as I set my things down on the desk.
"Uh, some guy from 5A, Sean, he said his name was," I explained, peeling off my nearly drenched coat and hanging it on the hook.
"Sean? As in Sean Monahan? As in Mony?" she gasped, her voice ringing with disbelief and excitement. I frowned at her though, clearly confused as to why she was so eager about some random boy.
"Yeah, that's the one. Why, do you know him?"
"Do I know him? Um, he's only like the hottest boy in our entire building. I had a stats class with him last semester and I swear I couldn't stop drooling. Lord, he's too beautiful," Madelyn gushed, hands pressed against her chest like she was some sort of a cartoon.
"Uh huh," I hummed, drowning her out in favour of emptying the contents of my bag and beginning on homework.
"El, you have to tell me what he said," she demanded, walking up to me to rip the invitation out of my hand. She analyzed it for a brief second before shrieking, "No way! Sean invited you to a party? I've been dreaming of this since freshman year. Everyone knows Sean's parties are the best. Gosh, we're so lucky! It's gonna be so much fun-"
The shrill of her voice was ringing in my head and I winced a little. "You know, I'm not really sure that I wanna go," I mumbled beneath my breath, pulling out my chair to sit down.
"What do you mean you don't wanna go? El, this is a once in a lifetime opportunity, nobody knows how to party like Mony. I promise your gonna have so much fun!"
"Yeah but this whole partying thing isn't really my scene, you know that I'd much rather have a quiet Friday night. Plus I have three exams to study for."
"Oh come on, don't be such a drag. Live a little, have some fun," she persuaded, her eyes wide blown and hopeful.
"Why don't you just go without me, you clearly have a purpose. What am I gonna go there and do?"
"What do you mean purpose? You don't have to have a reason to do everything El, sometimes you just have to forget logic and have fun. Plus I really need you there for backup, ya know, just in case."
I sighed. "Mady, I'm the worst person to want as back up and we both know that," I said, matter-of-faculty. It wasn't like this was the first time we were being invited to a party, Madelyn knew I wasn't comfortable with the whole idea and this time was no different. It didn't matter how good of a host Sean Monahan and his roommates were, I wouldn't be going to some lousy Christmas party.
"Please do it for me," she begged, grasping my cold hands between her warm ones. "I really like Sean. Like, really, really like him and I don't want to screw it up. I need someone there to keep me calm and cool so I don't do anything embarrassing. Please, isn't that purpose enough for you?"
I groaned, feeling trapped. Though I knew I would have an absolutely terrible time, I was familiar with crushes and just how lethal they could be. And maybe I could see Sean and Madelyn in a relationship; I didn't want to ruin what could be her only chance. But, I knew I wasn't going to enjoy it. I was going to be reminded of all the terrible times at high school parties, of being overshadowed by my so-called friends and vomited on by boys I really liked. Fuck, fuck, fuck.
"Okay fine. But I swear to god, if anything crazy happens I will leave."
Enveloping me in a hug, she screeched, "OMG! Thank you, thank you, thank you!"
A/N: This is an introduction more than anything to the main plot line but I hope you enjoy, tell me what you think and I know Johnny didn't make an appearance in this chapter (though Mony is just as great) I promise he'll enter with a bang in the next one. Lots of love xx
