*Luke's POV*
I sit on the edge of my bed with my head in my hands. I cannot believe I did it again. I'm a horrible person. I don't even remember why I hit Sophie last night. My temper is so short and I hate it. I hate everything right now. Especially myself.
I go to the kitchen. I don't think anyone else is home. Perfect. I reach for a knife, a sharp knife. I guide the blade along my wrist. Blood oozes from the fresh cut. I do it a few more times before washing the knife. I place a navy blue towel against my wrist as I walk back to my room. I start to feel a little dizzy.
I think about Sophie. She's the only thing on my mind. I don't deserve her. She's so beautiful and I'm ruining her. But I love her so much. She's the best thing that ever happened to me! Sophie has been vulnerable and weak since the day I met her. Her parents used to abuse her. I feel terrible every time I do something that hurts her, whether it's physical or not. But it's the way I am. I have a short temper and am easily irritated. Nasty comments are spat at people without my full consent, punches are thrown, people are hurt.
I get up and go to the laundry. I place the towel in the sink and rinse it with cold water. I place it in the washing machine as I hear the front door click closed.
"Hello?" I call out.
The sound of the footsteps stop. I hear the person mutter a swear. "Hey Luke," Sophie says.
*Sophie's POV*
"Hey Luke," I say. I was hoping that he wouldn't hear me.
I make my way to the kitchen and pour myself a glass of water. Luke comes in too. I hear him exhale loudly.
"Sophie I didn't mean it," He tells me. "I'm so sorry. If I could take it all back, I would."
It's the same apology I get every time. "It's ok Luke. It's not your fault. I aggravated you."
He reaches out at me and embraces me, but I flinch. "Sophie it's not ok. I don't want to hurt you anymore." His eyes mist and I cut him off before he says the words I know he will.
"Luke, I love you. I'm fine. We can work things out. Please don't end this," I beg.
He ducks down a little and places a kiss on my lips. He breaks the connection of our lips and looks into my eyes. They're big and sad and sorry.
"Let's go for a walk," Luke says. I nod with a smile.
"Just let me get changed first," I say, walking to the bedroom. I quickly change into shorts and a T-shirt. Then I go to the bathroom to reapply makeup to the now fully exposed bruise. Gosh, I'm so ugly. Why does Luke even like me?
We walk along the footpath, hands intertwined. As we near the house I yawn.
"Are you tired?" Luke asks.
"I little bit," I answer. We open the door and we're hit by the aroma of lasagna, my favourite food. We walk into the kitchen.
"Oh, your back just in time for dinner," Gina laughs, serving up the delicious meal.
We all sit down at the table. It's quiet again. Whenever Luke hurts me, there is very little conversation at the dinner table. But I don't really mind tonight because we are having lasagna.
When we're all finished, I collect the dishes and wash them, stacking them on a rack next to the sink to drip dry a bit.
I walk into the bedroom and change into some baggy pyjamas and lie down on the bed. I hear someone open the door. The light switches on and I scrunch up my eyes.
"Babe turn off the light please," I say.
"Soph," I hear Jai reply.
"Sorry Jai I thought you were Luke."
"Soph," Jai repeats. "What'd he do this time? Please don't let him continue this."
"It's not his fault. It's mine. I'm tired, goodnight Jai." I kiss his cheek.
"'Night Soph." He opens the door and passes Luke on the way out. Luke climbs into bed with me. He puts his arm around my waist, pulling me towards him.
