The room fell silent after Tony finished speaking, the blonde man looked deep in thought, going over and over the information he had just learned, hearing the egotistical billionaire share a story buried so deep down into his memory made him regret his behavior entirely. Somehow it felt wrong to know such an important piece of experience about a girl he has been nothing but an asshole to.
"How is she still standing?" Steve breathed out.
"She's been through hell and back, so you can understand why I will always advocate for her." Tony took the file from the blonde's hair and returned it to the shelf. He lived that same hell with the girl, he also did his best to pull her back from many dark places, he would be damn if he let someone drag her back there.
"I'm sorry, Tony, I should've known better, I-"
"You should have," Tony nodded slowly smiling bitterly, "but it's not me you should be apologizing to." he shrugged.
The two men kept talking for a while, little thing they didn't know, there was someone else listening to the conversation too. Behind Tony's office door, Pietro stood with his back against a wall, getting every detail, feeling the blood leaving his body. He needed to talk to Vera, if not to apologize, to know her side of the truth, he knew his sister would never lie to him but maybe and just maybe, there was something they were missing.
He ran around the compound looking for Vera, trying his best to go unnoticed by his sister, it was best for her not to know about this just yet. He finally found the girl laughing about something Clint had said. Natasha was the first to notice his presence, she noticeably tensed up, she stood up from her sit next to the girl and crossed her arms on her chest.
"Do you need anything?" She bitterly asked, Clint and Vera shared a look, amused at the girl's protectiveness.
"Uh, Vera can we talk?" He sounded nervous and they all noticed it, Vera rose an eyebrow tilting her head, she was not one to hold grudges but after what happened earlier with Wanda she was on edge, she didn't need her annoying twin looking out for her.
"I'm not in the mood for talking, Pietro," The tone of her voice instantly intimidating the man, she could be scary when she wanted to.
"Please, just for a second," He tried to walk forward but Natasha stood in his way placing her hand on his chest and shaking her head in denial. Her eyes looking at him hungrily, as if daring him to move an inch further.
"Nat," Clint warned.
"Listen, if this is about what happened with your sister, we can yell and argue later, let me be in peace for a day," she sighed rolling her eyes. Pietro shook his head and looked at her with pleading eyes.
"Is not about that," Vera squinted her eyes and stood silent for a second, scanning his face, he didn't seem mad, finally she nodded slowly.
"Vera," Natasha complained but she stood up an placed her hand reassuringly over her shoulder.
