"sugar-free cake kind of sucks you know," sapnap complains, stabbing mindlessly at his unfinished cake slice. he makes the decision to give up on it, leaning forward to discard it on the coffee table. "the icing just tastes like i'm eating butter."

"well rosie can't have sugar, and it was her birthday cake," dream replies, his own plate empty and stacked on the table with george and rosie's.

"okay well you should've made a sugar-free cupcake for her and a good cake for us," sapnap suggests, kicking his feet up on the couch.

dream hums, "maybe for your birthday."

sapnap looks back at the tv, trying to focus on whatever show dream had switched on after george left to take rosie to bed. it was some reality show that neither he nor dream would be interested in but the blond is on his phone so sapnap figures he'll just do the same whilst they wait for george to return.

sapnap peers over his phone at the blond just to admire from a distance and his heart stops when dream's gaze shifts right back to him.

the ravenette smiles and dream smiles right back.

for a moment, he simply watches his best friend exist. dream returns the favour.

"i like those shorts on you, by the way," dream comments randomly before he looks back down at his phone as if it meant nothing.

sapnap's heart skips a beat.

he's flustered, embarrassingly so. the ravenette brings his hand up (either to brush his hair from his eyes or adjust his cap, he's not sure) and forgets that his phone is in his hand and smacks himself in the face with it instead.

"ow shit," he curses as he drops his phone to his lap in response, rubbing the bridge of his nose.

dream wheezes at him, having clearly seen the embarrassing scene, and the blonde's body folds in half with the strength of his laugh.

"it's not that funny," sapnap defends despite his own smile, trying to ignore that weird stinging feeling that spreads through his nose.

"what's not that funny?" george asks as he enters the room, smiling simply at dream's laughter. he makes his way towards couch.

"sapnap hit himself in the face," dream answers through his laughter. george scoffs amusedly in response as he flops down beside the blond.

sapnap rolls his eyes at the pair's light-hearted bullying, looking back down at his phone. even with his head angled down, sapnap glances up at his friends.

he doesn't miss how george curls up to dream's side rather than just sitting beside the blond. he also notices how dream's arm, which was once rested along the back of the couch, was now over the brit's shoulders.

george shifts even closer and sapnap looks back at his phone.

sapnap's not an idiot. he knows that dream and george have a thing and he knew it was inevitable that they would get together but he's surprised that it's happened so soon. though, george has been here for a while now and they were probably a thing even before then so maybe he shouldn't be shocked.

still, the sight of his best friends cuddling makes him stop. it shouldn't, he knows it shouldn't. he knew they had something- really, he did. but he supposes that knowing and seeing are different.

he's happy for them too! it's sweet that they've found each other and that they're clearly happy. plus, they're going to be such great dads to rosie.

it's weird they haven't told him though...

"well," the ravenette starts, getting up with a long stretch, "i'm gonna head off for bed."

"alright," dream looks up at him with a smile, "goodnight sap." george smiles too from under the blonde's arm.

even their smiles look good together.

"goodnight, both of you," he says finally before he turns to leave, skipping each next step as he rushes up the stairs. he makes his way into the safety of his own room, closing the door quietly behind him with the unrealistic fear that he may wake rosie up.

he flops back onto his bed.

he'll have to get up and get ready for bed in a moment but he can't be bothered just yet.

...why haven't they told him?

it's not like it's a secret, since they just got all over each other on the couch in front of him, so why has he been left out of the loop?

he supposes it isn't his place to know. it's their relationship, not his, and they have no obligation to tell him anything.

the ravenette feels his heart like a rock in his chest, feeling heavy and uncomfortable and weirdly weighted against his ribs.

he doesn't care that they're together, of course not.

well, maybe he's a little sad...

he thinks he has a right to be though. he liked dream since they were teens, for god's sake, and he had a crush on george since it was theoretically not all that moral.

he never made a move because he always thought the two of them would end up together and it seems he was always right. a part of him feels proud about that since he predicted it so long ago, but another part of him aches with the wish that he could've been wrong.

why did he have to be right about this, of all fucking things?

maybe they know that he likes them. maybe that's why they haven't told him, because they want to try and preserve his feelings and the impending heartbreak. but that doesn't make sense because they're still making it pretty obvious that they're together.

or maybe they've left him out because they don't want him to try and worm his way into their relationship. they probably know that he likes them and they're trying to push him subtly away so he will back off and leave them to be happy together.

he was rosie's first word. he saw her first steps. they must be angry at him for stealing all the precious moments that the toddler's dads should've had, not just their roommate.

they'll probably ask him to move out soon so they can grow and raise their family without the pressure of having some other random dude living with them and getting in the way.

sapnap should probably leave before they ask him to, right? to save himself the humiliation. if he goes first they could stay friends.

he doesn't want to upset them by leaving though because he still loves them so much. he should just give them a break, maybe, since he's always around and taking up space and getting involved in their time together.

yeah, they'd like that.
