Chapter 23

The cargo plane landed a couple of hours away from the town Tres Rocas, but luckily there was a direct bus that took you straight to there. You, JJ and Kie weren't even in town for a couple of minutes before you quite literally ran into Pope and Cleo.

They were running from Singhs men, and the five of you quickly hid behind the nearest food cart while the men with guns began checking the bus. They questioned the bus driver, who to your shock, covered for you guys and lied to the men. Why he would lie for a bunch of strangers was beyond you, but you were grateful.

"They're gone, kids." Barracuda Mikes voice suddenly called out.

Cautiously, you all peaked out over the top of the cart, confirming that Singhs men were well and truly gone before you all stood up and stepped out from the hiding spot. Barracuda Mike was watching you all in amusement before motioning for you guys to follow him.

You spared a glance at JJ unsure if you should follow the drug dealer or not, but JJ gave you a small reassuring nod and you all quickly followed him down an alleyway to the river on the outskirts of town.

"Got anything to protect yourself? Other than your girl's handgun?" Mike asked, looking over at JJ.

"Uh, kinda working on that part." He admitted before Mike handed him a brown bag. "What's this?"

"Machetes. You'll need 'em." Mike answered, walking out onto the dock where an old wooden boat was tied up. "I'm adding the cost of this rig to what you already owe me. I don't expect to see it again anyway."

"You will get what we owe you. I promise." You insisted, and Mike nodded.

"Look, I uh, I asked around on the landing today... your buds did leave this morning, but I was able to get directions to El Tesoro. Pretty loose." He handed JJ a small piece of paper before continuing. "Only Jose knows the real way, but get you in the right zip code, maybe."

"It's a start. Thanks." Kie replied and you all nodded in agreement.

"No." Mike chuckled, shaking his head. "Don't thank me. Start praying."

You watched Barracuda Mike walk off back into the woods before you all climb onto the boat. You were surprised that the outboard actually started up, although it did take a few tries with the pull cord before JJ managed to get it started, but it was working.

It was kind of surreal sitting at the front of the boat while it cruised through the calm waters of the river. Tall trees and bushes towered over either side of the riverbank, the woods around you stretching for as far as you could see. It was beautiful. The exotic birds and animals in the area around you were chirping and communicating to each other over the loud rumble of the boat's engine.

For a while, you forgot how dangerous this mission was as you sat on the boat in ore, taking it all in.

"Best free vacation ever, right?" JJ called out from the back of the boat where he was steering.

You glanced over your shoulder at him, your eyes meeting his beautiful blue ones and he smiled at you with those perfectly slightly crooked teeth and beaming smile.

"This was totally worth getting shot for." You responded causing the others to all start laughing.

"I wouldn't go that far." Pope chuckled, looking around at Mother Nature. "But it is stunning."

"Damn right it is, man. Look at this." Cleo agreed, holding her arms out around her at all the lush scenery.

When it started to get dark, JJ pulled the boat up onto the side of the riverbank in a spot that was half hidden by the lush trees and bushes. Kie tied the boat to one of the tree branches and JJ turned the engine off before you all got ready to get some much needed sleep before continuing the journey in the morning.
