You rotated out drivers every few hours on the boat, taking turns sleeping and you found yourself on the same shift as JJ.
He sat on the chair behind you while you stood by the wheel, talking quietly together not wanting to wake the others sleeping in the cabin below.
"What did that Singh guy want from you and Kie?"
"He wanted Denmark's diary." You answered, glancing over your shoulder to see the surprised look on his face.
"Why?"
"He said it leads to a treasure that's much bigger than the Royal Merchant." You answered with a shrug.
"A much bigger treasure?" He repeated, standing up and walking over to you. "What kind of treasure?"
"Well, he thinks the diary has a clue to the location of some city of gold. Like the gold on the Merchant was just a small part of it."
"Okay, so the diary we have leads to a 500-year-old treasure that no one's ever found?"
You nodded, "pretty much."
"Wow." He replied, a little lost for words.
"If that's all true and if... if my dad is still alive, it is no coincidence that he was on that island at the same time we were. He's hunting the same treasure. All this time... he's still hunting fucking treasure." You said, shaking your head in anger.
"He might not be alive."
"I hope he isn't." You sighed.
"Hey. Look at me." JJ suddenly said, slipping his arm around your waist as you tilted your head up towards him. "Whatever happens, we're going to handle it together, okay? We always do."
You nodded, smiling softly at him before resting your head against his shoulder, your hands still on the wheel as you both stared at out at the sea in front of you.
After a quick pitstop for fuel and food, you continued the journey to OBX and by the following night, you finally reached the familiar waters of the Outer Banks. As you pulled up to the dock out the front of your house, you noticed an unfamiliar boat tied off. John B had bet you back home. He was here.
"Thank God." You sighed, a wave of relief washing over you.
"Are you two okay if we drop you off? I gotta drop off the others and swing by my dad's place for clothes that aren't weeks old." JJ said, glancing between you and Sarah.
"Yeah, of course." Sarah replied, already climbing off the boat and running towards the house in the dark.
"I'll see you in the morning." You replied, leaning forward and kissing him before you followed Sarah to the house.
It was dark. None of the outdoor lights were working which meant the electricity had been cut. Well, guess that made sense if no electricity bills had been paid for a while.
"He's asleep on the porch couch." Sarah whispered, quietly walking up the steps of the porch.
You followed, spotting your brother laying on his back on the old couch and you smiled. He was alive and he was okay. Thank goodness.
You thought about going inside and getting changed, but you were exhausted, and the cool night breeze outside would be a lot nicer than the hot stuffy house. So, you sat down on the old rocking chair while Sarah curled up beside your brother and you fell asleep.
-
"Dad! Hey, Dad!" A voice shouted, startling you awake in an instant.
"What the fuck?" You mumbled to yourself, sitting up and rubbing your eyes before you looked around to find Sarah and John B by the front of the house. "Some people are trying to sleep you know!"
