This begins during Season 1, Episode 2.

Third Person POV

Hawkins High School.

Barbara (Barb) is currently helping Nancy study for her upcoming test by using cue cards.

"When alpha particles go through gold foil, they become what?" Barb asks.

 "Unoccupied space," Nancy replies immediately.

Suddenly, Steve grabs the cue cards from Barb, interrupting the 'pop-quiz'.

 "Hey!" Nancy whines.

Behind Steve stands his friends, Tommy H, Carol (Tommy's girlfriend), and Steve's very own ex, Y/n Y/l/n.

"I don't know, Nance, I think you've studied enough," Steve says.

 "Steve..." Nancy complains.

"I'm telling you, you got this," Steve shoves the cue cards into his pocket. "Now, onto more important matters..."

Y/n looks excitedly at Nancy.

"My dad is out of town on a conference, and my mom is off with him 'cause she doesn't trust him." Steve continues.

"Good call," Tommy says, Y/n giggles.

"So, are you in?" Steve asks.

"In for what?" Nancy asks back, genuinely confused at the question.

"No parents? Big house?" Carol chuckles.

 "A party?"

"Ding, ding, ding!" Y/n says, celebratory.

"But it's Tuesday?" Nancy says surprised.

"It's Tuesday? OH MY GOD!" Tommy laughs, mockingly.

"Come on, Nance. It'll be low-key. Just us, what do you say? Are you in or out?" Steve asks.

Nancy begins to consider it, but out of nowhere...

 "Oh, God. Look." Carol says.

Everyone turns to look at what Carol was talking about.

"Oh, God. That's really depressing," Steve says unempathetically.

The group is staring at Jonathan pinning up MISSING Posters on the bulletin board in the hallway.

"Should we say something?" Nancy questions.

 "I don't think he speaks," Y/n jokes.

"How much you wanna bet he killed him?" Tommy says.

 "Shut up," Steve replies.

Nancy decides to go over and speak to Jonathan.

 "Hey,"

"Oh, hey," Jonathan says turning towards her, slightly.

"I just... I wanted to say I'm sorry I'm... um... I'm sorry about everything," Nancy fumbles out.

Jonathan looks over at the group who are watching from afar. They all look bored and uninterested, except for Barb and Y/n. Barb shifts her eyes to and away from Nancy and Jonathan whereas Y/n stares empathetically.
