The first gym battle of her life was so much harder than expected. She deserved this break. She wanted nothing more than to sit in the lobby of the Poké Center, kick back and relax, and watch TV.
When reruns of The Goldenrod Girls became too boring to suffer through, she began channel hopping. She skimmed through the usual broadcasted gym battles, educational cartoons, and soap operas. She almost skipped right past an interesting dance recital but paused at the right moment. The way that the performers moved with their pokémon in perfect synchronization was too graceful and beautiful for words.
This elegant, engaging display enthralled May. She sat up straight, and looked dead on at the TV. But just as soon as they started, the dancers had stopped. The stage was cleared, and the lights were dimmed. A lone dancer and her pokémon, a Swablu, stepped back onto the stage.
"First up, we have Felicia from Fallabor Town and Minty the Swablu!" an announcer said. The crowd cheered for Felicity and Minty, and they exited the stage.
Was this a talent show? She's never seen anything like this before. She watched as the performers, or contestants, walked across stage with their pokémon.
When they all had gone, Felicia and Minty took the stage again. Minty performed a particularly dazzling move, and the screen cut to judges sitting at a table. They gave positive feedback to the duo, and the screen cut back to the stage. They were now walking off, and the judges prepared themselves for whoever was up next.
"Hey, are you a coordinator?"
May looked up at the girl who had asked her that. She looked fairly young, still wearing a school uniform and carrying around a book bag. How did she know what a 'coordinator' was? May didn't even know what that word meant.
"No, um, I'm a trainer..." she replied, giving the girl a small smile.
"Oh. Why are you watching a contest then?"
"Because it's interesting?"
"Okay. Bye!"
'That was odd...' May thought to herself. But, now she knew that this was a pokémon contest. She had heard of these, but they weren't very popular in Johto, the region she's from. Now that she's in Hoenn, however, she had to give it a go. It looked too fun to pass up! If only she could figure out where and how to register...
