This story starts at the beginning of the end. It begins with a sheriff who is shot in the line of duty and is put into a coma. This sheriff's name is Rick Grimes. He's been in a coma for five weeks; today was the day he would finally wake up, seeing as he let out a few groan's before finally opening his eyes. He stares at the ceiling for a few minutes before glancing at the vase and mumbling something out, thinking his deputy friend Shane is there. When he gets no answer, he speaks a little louder asking if Shane is in the bathroom, to which he receives no response. He finally looks over at the vase and the flowers only to realize that they have wilted, meaning that somebody hasn't changed them for some time.
Rick then looks around at the clock and acknowledges that it has stopped moving. He blinks in confusion while looking around the room, and he starts to get up and off the bed with great difficulty; as he tumbles to the floor, he groans and weakly calls out to a nurse for help. When no help arrives after a few minutes, he can finally get up. He takes all the cords and IV needles off of himself, and he stumbles his way to the bathroom, where he drinks some water from the sink faucet. Rick then slips his way out of the room. As he opens the door, he looks down and notices that there is no one around and the hallway is in shambles; there are papers all over the place, IVs knocked over, and different items spewed all around the hall, and a bed has been pushed in front of his door as if to keep someone or something from getting in. As he stumbles through the abandoned hospital, he realizes no one is around. It had been evacuated in a hurry; he finally found the front desk, where he tried to use the phone only to learn it wasn't working; Rick looked around the desk to try and find a better source of light only to see matches 'Better than nothing I guess' he scoffed to himself he looked over to a pair of double doors with windows. He stumbled over and looked through the window, and to his horror, he saw the lone, decomposing, torn, open body of a nurse in the middle of the hallway. Rick quickly turns around and starts to walk as fast as he can away from the doors. As he continued down the halls, he noticed blood and bullet holes in the walls, doors, and floors. There was broken glass everywhere, and the ceiling looked to be falling apart. He finally reaches the cafeteria doors. "DON'T ENTER DEAD INSIDE" was written in what appears to be blood, and the doors were chained and bared shut with a slab of wood. As he was observing this, he was startled and stumbled back when he suddenly heard groaning and growling as rotting hands started clawing through the gap as if trying to get out. As he was speed-walking away from the cursed door and hungry hands, he missed the single glowing turquoise eye staring out at him. He made his way to the emergency stairs; as Rick descended into the darkness with only the matches he found as a light source, Rick couldn't help but feel he was being observed with every step he took. He finally finds the exit, where Rick is momentarily blinded as he opens the door. Rick finally adjusts to the light. He goes down the small flight of stairs and stops at the bottom. As he looked around, baffled and horrified, he was surrounded by mountains of body bags packed with the dead.

'W-what the hell is going on?' Rick finally asks himself as he stumbles through the graveyard as fast as possible. Eventually making his way out, he stumbles up a small hill where he finds an abandoned helicopter and what looks to be what's left of an army campground.

'I have no idea what's happening here, but I have to find Lori, Carl, and Shane,' he thought determinedly as he walked through the abandoned camp. As he walked away from the hospital, a lone figure stood on the ledge of the hospital roof, looking down at him as they tilted their head in curiosity before shaking their head and turning around, walking away from the ridge and disappearing. Having felt like he was being watched again, he finally turned to look around the area to try and find who might be watching him. He finally looked at the roof, only to see nothing was there.

'Hmm, there's nothing there. I must just be feeling paranoid from all the dead bodies around me,' Rick thought as he continued walking; he saw a bike near him. He makes his way over to it. As Rick started to pick it up, Rick quickly glanced over to find another
corpse, but this one was missing its bottom half. Thinking the corpse was dead, he picked up the bike when suddenly the corpse started moving and flipped over, startling Rick as he fell over with the bike. All Rick could do was look on in horror as the corpse growled and reached out toward him. He quickly snapped out of it, and with a disgruntled noise, he hoisted himself and the bike up and rode the bike away from the crawling corpse and towards his house with only a final look behind him at the corpse.

As he finally makes it to his house, he stumbles inside. "Lori," he calls out in a panic, only to get no answer. "Lori!" He tries again, once again getting no response. Walking through the house, he notices that clothes are spewed everywhere. The place looked like it was ransacked. It wasn't until he noticed that the pictures were gone that he realized that his family had packed up and left to get to safety from whatever was going on. He stumbles his way outside and sits on the front steps of the house, and puts his head in his hands, 'Just what the hell is going on? Where is everyone, why is everyone gone, and what the hell was that thing back there?' He questioned. He heard something moving from a small distance away, and he looked up and saw what he thought was a person walking towards him. "Hey," he called out, slowly stumbling towards him as he stood up.

"Hey, can you tell me what's happening and where everybody is?" He asked, gaining no response.

"Please, I just want to find my family. What's going on here? I just woke up at the hospital, and I don't know what's going on." He was about to ask again until he heard something move behind him, and as he turned around, he was hit in the face with a shovel! Everything seemed to go in slow motion as he fell to the floor; he watched as someone shot the "person"  he was talking to, and he could only mumble out his son's name right before he passed out...... "Carl?"...

..... then everything went black.......
