(After watching the trailer for the movie, Ruby Gillman: Teenage Kraken and became enthused by the idea of using Krakens as the main heroes and mermaids as the main villains since they in mythology used their voices to lure sailors to their deaths, and was also surprised that they made the villain look like Ariel but have a different name. Nevertheless, I felt a bit inspired by the movie and thought what the heck, why not make another tragic villain AU about Ruby Gloom, and how it relates to the idea of mermaids being evil.)
So Ruby in this AU is a mermaid, but she comes from a race of mermaids that are power hungry and intend to enslave the ocean and the surface and have it as their own. For this AU, Ruby was not given up by Rosemary, and she lives with her mother and her father, Gregory, who are the king and queen of their kingdom, making Ruby the princess.
When Ruby was little, she had a strong bond with her mother, Rosemary. As a child, Ruby would spend time with Rosemary as she teaches Ruby about the different lives of the sea creatures and take her to see the most beautiful sights in the ocean, while also sing her to sleep. Rosemary would also teach her about the values of love and kindness, and her dream of uniting the different sea creatures and humans in peace. Ruby was amazed and decided she too would follow the same dream that Rosemary had.
For Gregory however, while he was a noble and honest king, he had a rocky relationship with Rosemary, and wasn't as close to Ruby as Rosemary was. Secretly, for Gregory, he was a power hungry tyrant, who wanted to seize control of both land and sea, and remake it in his own 'perfect' version, and could care less on about his family, subjects and the other creatures of the sea.
Gregory didn't like the idea of uniting sea creatures and humans, for him, he cared more on gaining more power, and even manipulated some of the other merfolk, sea creatures and humans to turn against each other, and aid Gregory's plan into conquering both the ocean and the surface. He also created a special elixir for both his soldiers and members of his family, that would allow them to not feel any emotion and not hesitate to get rid of anyone that stood in his way.
Rosemary took notice of this and got into a fight with Gregory, saying that taking that drug would enable them to become monsters and would bring both the surface and the ocean's demise. But Gregory didn't listen as he only cared in gaining perfection and control. After that, Rosemary was suddenly poisoned and unfortunately passed away.
So Ruby had to grow without the love of her mother and Gregory tried to get Ruby to be on his side, but didn't like the idea of hurting others because she valued her mother's dream in gaining peace. Gregory however, told Ruby that there will always be bad people and it's best not to trust anyone, which resulted in Gregory using electric eels to electrocute Ruby as a form of punishment if she didn't follow orders, causing her to become afraid of him.
While some argued to Ruby that what Gregory did to Ruby was not something parents do to their children, Ruby however, still held onto Rosemary's promise of peace and didn't want to be angry at Gregory because he was her father and that she shouldn't be mad because of that, she also believed that Gregory was doing this because of Rosemary's sudden death and he's more of doing this out of grief. Soon after, her cousin, Poppy, and her aunt, Queen Cherry, joined sides with Gregory and started to torment Ruby too, causing Ruby to alone and broken.
One day, when Ruby turned sixteen, Gregory took her, Poppy, Cherry and the rest of his army to a kingdom of krakens to invade and destroy them. Gregory urged Ruby to kill an innocent kraken, but refused to do so since she believed that this wasn't what Rosemary wanted and that she would've wanted her people to unite everyone in peace. Gregory, however laughed and admitted that he was the one that murdered Rosemary so that she wouldn't be in Gregory's way in conquering the world. He even said that both merfolk, sea creatures and humans shouldn't be United by peace, and instead need to fear and respect their underwater rulers, and even admitted that he didn't care on what happens to them, just as long as he has power.
This made Ruby heartbroken, seeing Gregory taking away the krakens' home and seeing the true nature of what her people have been: power hungry and narcissistic. As Gregory ordered his electric eels to electrocute Ruby, something inside her snapped, and instead, she awoken a dark power, that would allow Ruby to summon rocks from the sea and trap all the mermaids inside, unaware that she also destroyed the Kraken village.
Ruby felt really guilty for what she had done and for all the damage her people have done and believed she might've helped them by doing nothing. But then, Ruby began to grow a dark feeling inside of her, that made her lash out at her family for the death of her mother and for their power struggle, instead of caring for the city. So Ruby grabbed Gregory's trident, and set out to get rid of all the mermaids in the sea, unaware that she has become the very monster Gregory wanted her to be.
Elsewhere, Ruby's other cousin, Rusty and her uncle, Jasper, saw what happened, and took this chance to get rid of the Gloom Family for their crimes, including Ruby, as they believed her to be dangerous.
