You find yourself on your first day at a new job. You even get your own desk and an office with a nice view of the outside world. "What the hell is that?" You look outside and don't recognize anything. "That's strange." You return to your desk to do some work, and now that you think about it. You have no idea what you were hired to do so you look around you. Your desk is a nice expensive mahogany and you have a brand new computer as well as a desk chair that spins. You always wanted one of those. You notice one of the wheels doesn't rotate, but you do your best to ignore it.
"Okay now back to work." Your name tag is on your desk and you inspect it. Under your name it reads, "Office Specialist" You place the tag down and look around. Everything is in its place. Your stapler is there, it's even got your name on it. The light overhead is bright and you look at your watch. You see a clock face without any hands, "Great" you think. You stand up from your chair and look down at yourself. You're an average built person in a nice formal office outfit. You definitely dress to impress. All members of the opposite sex want you. Whether they realize it yet or not.
"What in the world do I do here?" You look out your indoor window to the rest of the office and see an arrangement of cubicles which all happen to be empty except for one and you see just the top of someone's head over the cubicle wall. It's probably a woman and she has black hair. You walk out of your office and maneuver around the numerous cubicles. There's at least twenty empty ones, yet they don't look like anyone has ever used them.
You slowly approach as you begin to feel nervous, "Hello there." You say in a mostly friendly voice.
The woman is Asian, probably Chinese, and she looks at you with the brightest smile, "Oh good morning boss! What a pleasure it is to have you in the office today." her voice was cheery, but you sensed something was off. Her head movement was robotic and she didn't look you in the eyes, but at your chest area. She didn't lift her gaze when she turned to you. She faced her computer again and you looked at her desk, it's littered with empty Almond Joy candy wrappers and a half eaten one sits by her cup of coffee. She is staring at a dark computer screen and is typing away at a mile a minute, she is writing something about the company and something about a sales report. In the darkness of the screen you catch the reflection of her face as you now stand behind her. She locks eyes with you through her reflection and has the same big smile as before. She suddenly stops typing and turns in her chair to see you and she locks eyes this time, "Was there something else you needed?" Her eyes glare into you unblinking. Her voice was soullessly vibrant like a woman in a toothpaste commercial who was far too happy.
"I'm sorry, Well Yes, I have a question, Where is everyone?" You ask nervously and don't want to look at this woman's face any longer.
"What an odd question." She tilts her head, "This floor only has two employees. You and me." She blinks once.
"Ok, Uh okay." You are creeped out by her entirely, "And what company is this?" She points to the wall behind you. You turn to see a big poster on the wall that reads, "HumanoCorp Inc." The words are big and bold with tiny lower text, "A better future begins here." Then suddenly, a phone rings in your office.
