You felt freezing cold water coat your backside as your eyes fluttered open, met with nothing but the dark abyss ahead of them. The sound of falling water droplets echoed through the atmosphere as you sat up, scanning your surroundings. When you stood to your feet you couldn't help but feel a sense of dread as your reflection stared back at you, expressionless.
The water beneath you then froze over with a stomp of your foot as you stared down at the frost. Putting one foot in front of the other, you aimlessly walked for what seemed like eternity until you felt a tug in your wrists. Soon, you couldn't move at all. Confused, you gazed down at the dark ropes that had a deathly grip around your body, feeling your chest tighten as you sweatdropped.
You dropped to your knees in anguish as everything around you began to spin, the tightening in your chest getting worse as you gasped for air, gritting your teeth so hard they might just shatter. Burning tears brimmed your eyes as you now layed on your back, trying scream but nothing came out.
Your body began to feel hot as the water beneath you broiled your skin. As your nerves burned away you became numb, alone with your thoughts as you closed your eyes.
Jolting from your slumber you feel all around your body for ropes or burns. You sighed in relief, finding nothing but your warm flesh and clothes. Your shoulders slumped as you stared down at the ivory sheets, holding your hands tightly together as the full moon shone through the open balcony.
You looked to your right as the green haired adeptus softly snored, his chest raising up then down. You placed your palm on his burning forehead, hoping the cold temperature will stabilize his condition for the time being. Hovering your hands slightly above his form you moved the frigid cold all throughout his body. Xiao had been in a comatose-like state for the past three days, one day he went to sleep and never woke up. A parasitic illness had taken over his body, unsure of how or when it happened, Dr. Baizhu stopped by the inn last night and gave him an herb.
'All we can do now is wait.' He stated,
"..Y/n?" A small voice croaked in the silence while another pair of hands clasped over yours.
You raise your eyebrows in shock, about to respond when a crash followed by a series of screams echo through the Wangshu Inn. Xiao jolts up as you both rush out of the bed, making yourselves look decent as you grab your weapons.
The cries of a Hilichurl tribe boomed through the walls of the Wangshu Inn, terrorizing everything in their path.
"Y/n! Evacuate the civilians and get them to safety, I can handle the Hilichurls easily." Xiao commanded, grasping your shoulder.
"What?! Hell no! Any other day this would have been okay but you just woke up from a three day coma, you evacuate them, I'll fend off the tribe." You argued with the Yaksha, brows furrowing in disapproval.
"We don't have time for this, I'll be fine. Now go!" He dashed away before giving you time to protest, leaving alone amidst the chaos.
You suck your teeth and began crowding the guests together, leading them outside and eliminating the Hilichurls that strayed from the rest. After confirming that everyone was to safety you sprinted back to look for Xiao.
Seeing him run through the Hilichurls you breathe a breath of relief, only to be interrupted when he suddenly collapses. You watched the remaining tribe began to circle him as they striked his weakened form.
Fuming and blinded by rage, you impaled each Hilichurl with a spear of ice as they decomposed into ashes on the ground, only stopping when each one is eradicated from the world. You looked in Xiao's direction as he lay there, unmoving.
"Xiao!?"
You panted and kneeled to your lover's frail state, his body was like a furnace, you could feel the heat radiating from it. You stroked his cheek, rocking him back and forth as you pressed your forehead to his.

It had been five days since then, Xiao became comatose again, leaving you to take care of him for the time being. You refused to give up hope, you refused to be the last standing of the Yaksha.
You sighed through your nose as the orange glow of the setting sun gleamed through the curtains, leaving a ray of light on Xiao's face. Slumping down in the wooden chair, you began to drift off to sleep, back to that horrid place. You had been having a reoccuring nightmare lately, where you didn't make it to him in time.
You felt a warm sensation on your cheek as you opened your eyes again, beautiful golden ones already staring back into yours. You shot up from the back of the chair as your lover's hand retreated. Tears cascaded down your face as you smiled, placing a soft, chaste, kiss on his lips.
"I'm here."
(A/N: i hope this turned out ok 🤧)
